Forums - Nintendo - Crystal Bearers developer: Selling on Wii will not be easy.

@PsychoBrew some points i would like to make.

Wii has more RPGs than Action-Adventures.

Crystal Bearers is an RPG because of it's story values. Gameplay wise Adventure Role Playing games and Action-Adventures are indistinguishable. Even if it wasn't an RPG, it doesn't matter. Games are Games and as long as it is quality I'm up for it.

The Crystal Chronicles series already has an existing fanbase that will buy this game.

This is looking to be my Wii third party game of the year 2009. It is of quality.

15 hours is way too short for an rpg...i'm not sure if it could reach a million however, no doubt it will sell much better than the first CC port...

I think the game is going to have a lot of good side quests to make up for the short 15 hrs. It sounds like a game where you can push through in 15hrs, but to complete everything it takes 100hrs+. As for sales, I have some doubt it will make a milliion, but I truly think it will pass it and maybe even the first Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles which sold around 1.3mln.

@Lord you mentioned that they gave Dead Space better scores because it was cinematic. I gave you a list of highly reviewed games that aren't cinematic which would prove your point wrong. Carnival Games wasn't meant to be cinematic, neither was Mario or LBP or Forza.

You make it sound like reviewers are this disconnected people who live in fantasy land and aren't just gamers. They don't think every game should be cinematic or those games wouldn't get high review scores.

You also said it was judged by its contents and not by how well it did what it was meant to do. If you are only going to judge games by how well they simulate something that's not a full review, other factors should be taken into consideration: quality, fun, originality and so on.

How is "they gave Dead Space" the same as "they do that for every game"? I did not write that they only give good scores to cinematic games. How the hell could you read that as applying to them all?

If there is any implication it's that they prefer cinematic games over other factors, but not all other factors.

But that I do generalize is that if they like the content (in the case of Extraction it was being cinematic, in the case of Forza it was a driving simulator), they tend to review games better, but if they don't like the content (being at a carnival which they brushed off as "kiddie"), the reviews seem to ignore things like fun and originality.

You said they gave dead space high scores because they think games should be cinematic and I'm saying that's not why they gave it a high score. You also implied that they give high scores to cinematic games because they are cinematic which they do not give to all cinematic games.

You say that their reviews are based on content, but isn't that a big part of a review and most reviews (major sites at least) take into consideration the fun as a big factor and originality is usually considered a plus so what you are saying is fun is ignored which is false because fun is the first thing a game is reviewed on or should be anyway.

Also 'kiddie' games get good reviews too, viva pinata had a kid-friendly aesthetic and was somewhat original and it got great reviews.

Reviewers (good ones at least) rate CoD or Uncharted or Halo or whatever game high because it was fun to play first and foremost.

'And they showed a teaser at E3 2006, before the Wii is released? Right. Maybe what you are referring to is mentioning the major change in the game. Either way my point stands, they were planning for the game to be put on the Wii before the Wii's launch.'.

Yeah, they must have spent a wad on it by now.

At least you're addressing my comments as they were now (more or less). It was acting as though I stated something else that annoyed me.

3rd parties on Wii: "WHAAAAAA my masterpiece games never sell on Nintendo consoles because Nintendo's games are too popular!!!1 And their fans are too picky!!! WHAAAAAA!!!"

I love how 3rd parties blame Nintendo, and their fans, but never themselves.. you know, the one's who actually MAKE THE GAME!

Quit crying, man up, and make a good Wii game. And people will buy it. Otherwise don't even bother making games for it at all. Because we don't care about your damn half assed support. I know this sounds harsh, but I'm so goddamn tired of the 3rd party whine-fest on Wii, or any nintendo console for that matter.

And here is the Wii fanboy reaction: whatever game doesn't sell on Wii must be bad cause you know Wii owners are infallable. So I guess by that logic Wii Play is a much better game than Mario Galaxy since sales determine what is best and the Godfather is nothing compared to the film masterpiece INDEPENDENCE DAY.

By this logic Muramasa, The Conduit, Okami, No More Heroes, Madworld and Dead Space Extraction are all bad games because they did not sell as well as other games did. Kung Fu Panda the game is much better than the majority of games in the world because it sold well.

Also like how you are already pre-judging the game because they just happened to mention that 3rd party games' sales are not an easy atmosphere for their release. Bravo.

How about this: Quality does not equl mass appeal. Bioshock from many accounts is as good or better than Gears, but it didn't sell as much (a lot, but not as much). This has been that way for any system. So it's not the lack of quality games on the Wii. It's the lack of mass appeal games (for the most part).

Plus The Godfather was actually a smash hit, and would probably have a higher gross than ID4 if adjusted for inflation.
