I found that chart Seece. Looks like I was a little off on the $10B number, and the chart hasnt been updated since last year. But according to this the Xbox division was at $6.3B in the red at the end of FY 2008.

Awesome, thanks. so 5 QRTS have passed since that was posted hmm ..

Yeah it would be nice if the finiancial geniuses around here would update that.   But my guess is with Microsoft doing as well as they have that unmber is getting close to $5B and maybe even under

Possibly, I also wonder how much lower the PS division has come down, see as they havn't been making too much profit lately. I asked Source for an updated version if he has one, I'll post it in here or on your wall when/if he has one.

Yeah, I imagine Sony has basically drained the majority of the profits from the PS2 and PS1 eras.

Microsoft will have IPs in place, Xbox LIVE fully integrated, and will have Blu-Ray in the next Xbox. Microsoft is just learning as they go on.

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

they will have Bluray? Well that's news to me.

no way is vgc off by 1.4M, MS is wrong.

Don't be so proud of this numeroligical terror they've constructed.

I'm sure that MS has a much better handle of exactly how many systems they've sold than someone who looks the number up on a website that (admittedly) estimates its figures.  This would not be the first (or last) time that VGC is off by a few %.  There have been times where it's been off even more than that.

An argument can be made that he mispoke, or that what he said isn't what we think it means (shipped vs. purchased), but to flat out say that MS is wrong, because VGC somehow knows their business better than they do, is rather condescending.

maybe if you read the other 2 threads, you would understand that their number is shipped not sold.

I assumed that all the other people who are new to the site finally figured it out and stopped responding to this thread. VGC is right, and MS not only misspoke, but intentionally misrepresented the figure.

No, it is you who are intentionally misrepresenting the figure to make yourself feel better about VGcharts, and that is the sad, sad truth.

I currently reside under the London Bridge.

Does anyone know what I did with my hat?

Who do I believe? VGC who has guestimates for figures or Microsoft who actually have the real figures in front of them?

Sounds to me like "You're wrong". Even if these were shipping numbers, VGC would still be off by 500K or more.

Yeah here we go

$4 bill lost on original Xbox

Yeah.. that's about right. They have been profitting with the Xbox 360 for more then 2 yrs now, so they are probably almost out of the RED by now. This definitely be in the positive before this generation is over. Sony has had hhuge losses the last 2 quarters. Not only in their gaming division, but also their electronics (HDTV, Blu-Ray, DVD, Camera, CD Players, Receivers, etc..) division has posted large losses. I don't know how they stay afloat. Maybe their movie studio is doing well enough. Anyway, Microsoft and the XBox 360 is on the right track for now.

Unfortunately Microsoft still have a few billion left before they're in the black. The 360 was a loss leader at the start and RROD cost $1 billion.

Like you said though the good news is the 360 has been profitiable for the last 2 years and everything is looking up, by the end of the gen it wouldn't surprise me if the Xbox franchise is profitable overall. Now that WOULD be a comeback.

i don't think it's that much. They already made up for the $1 billion RROD warranty. If anything they probably have just over a billion to make up for and they should get that by the end of the year or Spring of next year. They'll be out of the black completely next year.

And exactly how would Microsoft know? They do not track sales to customers, they track their sales to retail stores. How are they supposed to know whether some shop sold the 360s they bought? They don't.
Especially around this time of year a shop would order another 5 units because they are expecting higher sales for the holidays. Do you really think MS would say, "that means they sold the other ones we already sent them". No, because it isn't true.

What are you talking about "even if these are shipping numbers, VGC......"? 500k or more of what? The estimates are on the front page saying that VGC expected 3.3M consoles to be shipped, and MS said 3.5. That's 200k not 500k, shipped.

Additionally VGC is not purely estimate on top of estimate. NPD and other sources release their official numbers every month. VGC can use these to tell how close the estimate is. If the numbers don't match up, they may alter them. Keep in mind that at least once, NPD has had different numbers than VGC, and then NPD changed their numbers to match VGC.

You both need to lurk moar, because you obviously have no idea how this works.

Less than 2 million more and they have 20 million sold in the US. Not to bad, now they need to work on Europe.
