Forums - Nintendo - In hindsight what could have Nintendo done to stem piracy on Wii?

If they would give away all games for free, pirates could do nothing about it.

sadly i think it is. I know people who have 100s of wii games all pirated.

Effects of piracy is over rated.  Sure they have 100s of wii games pirated, but if they couldn't of pirated them I doubt they would of bought 5 additional games.  At best they might of rented some of them instead.

The reason the GameCube beat it wasn't disc type, it was just the fact that it was next to impossible to physically get unsigned code running on there, due to a lack of any kind of standard data port (like Wii has SD Card and USB. GameCube had neither, closest you could get was ethernet, and then you had to jump through a lot of hoops to utilize it)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

what could they have possibly done? kill every modder/hacker? all consoles get modded and pirated, that's just how it is (with some exceptions of course)

like the PS3, it still isn't modded, i think it's because if you have enough money to buy one then you got enough money to buy all the games you want (not really the case anymore, lol). it might also be due to bluray, but that format has been cracked for a long time now (poeple can copy PS3 games now but they can't play them, hahah) so i don't know how much that affects the situation.

ps3 has been modded. my friend has a modded ps3 that he uses to play emulators off burned discs. he said he has a few other things that he has done with it, but i dont remember.

I know a few people with modded wiis running games from a usb hard drive or from the sd card... Even with the latest system 4.2 update everything works after a workaround was released by the homebrew community.

I guess having custom media and not having usb or sd ports would have helped curb piracy.

Huh, it was easy to pirate on GC.  That's what made Wii mod come out so fast, as the same trick worked on Wii that worked on GC.

Cartridges. It's the answer to every problem.

Yes, cartridges make pirating the DS games easy. Those little cartridge adapters that take the mini SD cards, too easy. Just download from PC and insert cartridge.

So what was the question?

Uh....nevermind, jlauro.
