I have been reading this site for months now, but am really new to posting. I saw this article referenced today on several sites and thought it made an interesting point. I am not sure who Jesse Divinch is, so I'd love to see what you all think...
"We've all seen the sales numbers for September by now. Xbox 360 sold 527,000 for the month while Wii sold 501,000. PlayStation 3 was in third, once again, with 119,000 units altogether.
So, to the casual eye, it would appear that Nintendo Wii was beaten by Xbox 360, whilst still mopping the floor with PS3. But analyst Jesse Divinch of simExchange sees it differently. Using his logic, Nintendo's console was actually the victor for the month. Here's how:
"In a way, the Wii is still victorious," said Divinch. "It faced many obstacles in September, including: hardware constraints, strong first party titles on other consoles, no strong releases of its own platform, and announcements of software bundling and price cuts from its competitors."
He does have a point. Sony has already slashed their price to help sales and the 360 had a little title called Halo 3 which came out in September. Nintendo had squat, no price cut, no killer titles, no new bundles, and still had the second best month since launch.
So even though the 360 had more sales for the month, Divinich said it's "expected to be short lived with the Wii regaining the top spot for the remaining months in 2007."
I think the 360 definitely won September, but I have to agree with the thought pattern here. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Ps3 with the US drop, and the 360 in Japan with a drop. I think the war might really just be starting :)
