Hey i can watch tv series on DD that wont even be shown here for months, how will physical media be better for me there?

yes you can, but how does that translate to the Majority of people?

Like i said many people do not even use their Computer for TV function's, to many people Digital Download's

are too, complicated with physical format's just pop the disc in and it work's.

people have been used to that way of watching movies.

Just pop the VHS tape in and it work's, but ask how many people had trouble setting the clock on that VHS. I mean it was a running joke

people had VHS's they played movies on but flashing time clock's. for pete's sake's.

still today you would be suprised how many people still do not even have Email account's let alone know how to work a DVR.

many people just do not have the time to learn those thing's, and need some people like us to help , or do it for them.

until more time passes, Digital Download's taking over physical media is a PIPE DREAM.

IF IT DOES, IT WOULD NOT BE FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

CD to MP3 syndrome..

Remember when people said MP3's would never over take CD's.

I remember my friends and people saying they need to have the CD case and the lyrics..

I ...

I don't recall anyone ever saying this about CD's.  In fact people were rampantly stealing MP3s through Napster.  The big difference between a CD/Album and a movie is a CD only contains 1 or 2 songs that most people want.  They can buy those songs for a dollar or two from iTunes rather than buying the complete album for $15.  Nobody is going to buy individual scenes from a movie.

It isn't nearly as hard as you are portraying it. If you can browse the internet, you can get movies. I could teach a 3 year old how to do it. It might even be easier than using a dvd remote.

The rental market already relies heavily on the internet, namely NetFlix. That's how it translates into the majority of people. If they are used to the NetFlix model, then DD is the next logical evolution.

NetFlix is a company that is dedicated to the distribution of content. They have the choice of focusing on blu-ray or DD. NetFlix is so excited about blu-ray, they forget to mention it in their latest commercial. The fact is NetFlix is putting their bets on DD, not Blu-ray. They can see the writing on the wall.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

I tell you Im not from the US and I havent heard of NetFlix before they mentioed in these forums. People here rent movies in blockbuster or a similar thing called bazooka which works in a similar way.

but I thought bluray was talking up the slack from dvd?

The most hilarious thing about this to me, is that Selnor posted this article as some pseudo shot at the PS3, Sony or a defense of Microsoft for not including Blu-Ray in some way.

With that being said, ofcourse Digital Distribution will be on the rise (To a point). So will Blu-Ray.

Sony included the ability for Digital Distribution and Blu-Ray movies on their PS3, which effectively is the 'enitre' market. Microsoft did not. So it's just Selnor being foolish yet again.

Blu-Ray well become the next 'DVD' with probably a somewhat smaller marketshare when it's all said and done.

Another thing that needs noted, Digital Distribution is great for 'rentals' but not so much for ownership at this point in time.

^^^ The most hilarious thing are postings that make little sense...LOL!

The most hilarious thing is: why didn't Selnor tell MS about the future of DD vs physical format BEFORE it lost billions on HD-DVD?

No one in their right mind thinks that "collectors" are the majority. For every "collector" there are probably 50-100 people that don't collect and only buy a dvd/blu-ray on occasion. DD is not a "microsoft" thing so I don't know where people come up with the defending microsoft part of it. Yes Microsoft has a lot to do with the codecs and such but thats it.

Some of these people above speak like their point of view is the only "true" point of view and they aren't even factually correct.

The fact is people who own blu-ray players already know about blu-ray on netflix, from previous commercials and otherwise, and netflix has scrambled to increase their % of blu-ray discs over the past year.  Netflix also wants to advertise DD, hence the mention in the commercial.  The advertisement doesn't mean that Netflix is 'putting their bets' on DD and not blu-ray.  That doesn't follow at all.

And anecdotally, the crap quality of Netflix streaming movies is one of the reasons I cancelled Netflix months ago.  In 2 different apartments in Los Angeles, both with cable internet, I almost always got stuck with the lowest quality of stream when Netflix checked my connection.  I had no option to buffer ahead and get a better picture, etc.  No: blu-ray through Netflix is so, so much better; it works, and it's the best quality around.

@heruamon: Rpruett's points were all valid and counter selnor's obvious implication, if that's who you said made little sense.  And blu-ray sales are rising quickly, is that picking up the slack?
