If it were mandatory to pay for online play, I'd do my online gaming on PC only. Out of principle.

Agreed. I bought the system. I bought the games to play online. I refuse to pay a fee to do what I already paid for.

You didn't buy the service that allows you to play online. Just the game and the option to use the service. Please don't tell me you think paying for a service like XBL or PSN is like paying for your internet connection twice. Becuase I just got done pointing out that it isn't (for the one millionth time)

Seriously dude, there are some of us who believe that it's wrong for us to go buy a game and have to pay to use something that's on the disc we bought. If the online is on the disc that I BOUGHT WITH MY OWN MONEY, AND I NOW OWN, then I will not pay to use something that I already own. For games like online MMORPGs that I don't have to go out and buy, I wouldn't have as much problem of paying a subscription since I don't own the game; I never went out and bought it.

Just accept that some of us won't pay to play online.

MMOs are also constantly being updated with heavy hits on bandwidth and servers that costs $$, PS3 online games are "mostly" based on P2P connections whereas XBL has actual servers, so there is no reason to charge for PSN at all. The problem with the way PS3 does things is that you have to pray for everybody you play with to have good connection speed like yours, and that's why it's free. PC is still the superior in that aspect since you can just run servers for nothing but your usual internet bill for the most part unless you are in a big clan that rents them.

I think you have PSN and XBL switched. PSN is not a P2P network, and XBL is a P2P network. But yes, this is the free market, XBL is a pay service, and as long as people are willing to purchase the right to use that service, MS will continue to charge.

BTW. Servers are not free, they cost money to upkeep, upgrade, they use elctricity. What you though a server was just a bare bones computor that runs on air in an enclosed room that never sees daylight?

No. Our $60 a piece pays to keep the servers running.

I have moved and do not have the internet at home, yet.

I'm not sure if you're agreeing with me or not. So, this isn't necessarily directed towars you.

Trust me, it's nothing personal, if I seem a little persnicketty, it's because I have been repeating myself since the thread was started (although it is doing wonders for my VGchartz $ lol)

What I'm saying is that I can understand MMO's charging a subscription fee. I just won't pay it, so I won't play them. Really, that's all there is to it. I REFUSE to pay to play online. If I can't play it right out of the box, then I'm not gonna do it. I have better way to spend my money.

Fair enough. See THAT is an argument that is logical. I can stand behind it.

EDIT: To clarify, DLC is okay, but I usually don't buy it since it tends to be for multiplayer a lot. If, however, the dev includes the DLC on my disc, but requires me to pay to unlock it, THEN I have a problem.

I've been playing MMO since the start of it and didn't quit it until last year =P the thing is, I think we need to be subjective and see if a service is worth your money, with the way XBL is right now, I don't think it's worth my money( if I'm paying, why the fuck do I see ads? I'm paying for voice chat which is free on other platforms, online play which is free on other platforms, and it's not enhancing my experience,) so I dropped the service awhile ago and eventually sold my 360. as far as I'm concerned, once they implement cross game voice chat and work that out on the PS3, XBL would be worthless anyways, I see no value in it.

That's fine. I can understand being frustrated from things, trust me.

The other arguement says WHY I refuse to do it. I have the view that when I buy the game, and the online part is on the disc, then I own the online. If I can't play it for free, I won't play it. I think that's what most people are trying to say here.

EDIT: To clarify, DLC is okay, but I usually don't buy it since it tends to be for multiplayer a lot. If, however, the dev includes the DLC on my disc, but requires me to pay to unlock it, THEN I have a problem.

I don't have live yet just got an xbox but I really want to play forza 3 online. I play socom on ps3 that is the only game I really play constantly online. If Sony charged I would pay because between socom 2 and confrontation I would have more than got my dollars worth. I'm not sure if I'm jumping live or not but it's all a matter of worth to the consumer

XBL is NOT P2P, they are charging because they are literally running servers for the games. PSN works more like a web server, and when you are playing online games, it's all P2P for the most part unless the specific game has dedicated servers, which is also how the Wii(Nintendo uses gamespy service btw) works in general. P2P costs nothing for Sony or Nintendo when in effect, the only bandwidth they'd be using is for matchmaking, kind of like hand shaking people together much like what we are doing right now in a sense on an online forum, so of course it's free, the problem is P2P is strictly based on the players' connection speed. I have a problem with XBL because I simply think they are charging too much for what I would get.

OK, you know what? I just did some digging, and I'm stuck in the old Xbox days when there were actual servers, apparently that's not true anymore for the most part, XBL is now officially on my shit list, thanks for the info ironman.
