Forums - Microsoft - At what price point would you ditch XBL?

Oh dear youre not very bright are you lol.

I have an excellent Internet connection.  Its 20MB DL and 768KB upload.  And with an extremely good router.  Also as an IT Manager I know how good my connection is and if it wasnt excellent I wouldnt put up with it.

I have 2 Xboxes and 2 accounts because theyre are 2 different people playing at the same time.  This doesnt not mean however that we are both playing the same game or that we are both playing multiplayer games (before you blame that for lag)

A lot of the features you mention have only just been added AND some of them you have to pay for.  I also wouldnt use any of them.  I have my PC and laptop for things like Facebook.

And the comment about other platforms using servers to host games and costing more as a result is of obvious relevence.  It costs MORE and yet is FREE.  Get a grip.

The point about Skype is that and I cant believe I am having to explain something so simple.  Voice Over IP is a free technology.  It doesnt cost anything to host or to implement, so paying for cross gaming chat doesnt cost anything either.

If you do a simple calculation around 1 year ago it was noted that Microsoft had around 10 million gold subscribers at aounrd £40 per year.  That means Microsoft are making £400 million so they can SELL you movies, additional content the odd freebee and allow you to host your own games.

I love my Xbox, I just dont like being ripped off.

Now if you were to get off your FANBOY soap box and breath the air of reality youll realise that 99 percent of the features you think are worth paying for can be used on the Internet for free.  And the things that you pay for on Xbox live cost no more elsewhere.

So with all this made clear.  JUST WHAT ARE WE PAYING FOR.

halo muliplayer online

if you are not happy with paying then dont pay.for me microsoft let me go back into gaming. the ps2 was the biggest dissapointment in the ps2 generation i quit gaming and jioned with the 360 which was a totaly different experience. i pay for halo to play online for 1 vs 100, demos 1 week before silver members, halo waypoint, party chat etc.... i dont pay microsoft to download movies :P
one last thing i wish i could get my old dashboard :( to me the old dashboard is better than the new one they could implement the avatars party chat on the old dashboard.

Well said

Halo is a damn good reason to pay for live!

I think most of you are bonkers.

uhuh, judging from your satements here, the same could be said of you.

Xbox live just incase you hadnt noticed is mainly a shop that you can spend more money paying for movies etc.  So for example if I were to go to a video store like blockbusters I would pay around £4 for a dvd.  On Xbox live Id pay (wait for it) £4.50.

XBL just incase you hadn't noticed, is an online community that just happens to have a very conveniant online shop available to it. You forget that with the gold membership, you can use crossgame chat, play games with or against other gold members, and have access to free content. But hey, don't let the facts stop you!

Also on Xbox Live you or another person playing is the host of the game and therefore everyone is affected by 2 factors, 1 the quality of your connection and 2 the location of the players.  This is about 40 percent of the games I have seen causes unbareable lag and also enables people to use lag switching to give themselves an unfair advantage.

I believe that would be your connection. Ever since  Igot my new ISP I would say my lag experiance has dropped from about 30% to about 7%...and that is with a really crappy router. Nice try though.

On other platforms servers are being used to host games.  Which is odd as this is a much more expensive way to enable online gaming at yet, you are not charged for it.

This may be true, but it has no relevance to the topic at hand...actually, non of this really does, it looks to me more like a troll post...

I have 2 Xboxs and therefore have to pay £80 a year to play online.  If I were to change to 2 PS3's that would be nothing.

No, you can switch your account back and forth between them if you really must use them both, it only takes five minutes.

And just one last thing.  Cross game chat is not worth anything.  You can download software like Skype on a PC and do the same sort of thing for nothing.  Once again Microsoft is just ripping people off and until everyone says no thanks they are not going to change.

Yeah, since when have you ebver used skype or MSN to chat with people plying other games on the PS3...I would venture a guess...NEVER. you know why? because that is a clunky and inefective way of doing it. Don't try to downplay crossgame chat, it is a lot better than you make it out to be.

Honestly paying £40 a year to host your own games.  Refuckingdiculous.

Not really, it's the only option for people wanting to play certain exclusives online with their friends. I would say your statements thus far have been "Refuckingdiculous".

Now after all that I wouldnt mind paying £10 a year.  I think thats fair for a service that gives you nothing you cant get elsewhere for free.  They can make their money from the DLC, which btw is being well over used by companiesa and that is going to backfire if they are not careful.

Yes because the netflix, Last FM, Facebook, and crossgame chatting are something that PSN offers. seriously dude, get a life.

I'm not sure you can use Facebook and Twitter as additions to XBL that are worth the subscription since you can very easily access both on PS3 through the built in browser.  Not so sure about Last.FM--haven't tried it and will probably never use it even on Xbox.  Cross game chat is supposedly coming to PS3 very soon, so that will no longer be a sticking point either.  In the end, if the rumors come true at least, the only really big differences there are going to be are Netflix and Last.FM.  Sony could easily come up with its own solution to Last.FM, and probably will, so that kind of just leaves us with Netflix which is supposedly an exclusive deal, at least for now.

So if you're going to compare PSN to XBL, the only really big sticking point you're going to have is Netflix.  Truth be told, now that I have a PS3 too, I have converted my Netflix account (the one I originally started mostly just to use on the 360) over to all BluRay so that I can watch movies on my PS3.  There are very few new releases on Instant Queue that are worth watching--most of it is garbage--so I rarely use it anymore unless I want to watch an old 80's movie for nostalgia's sake.

I'm sorry, but it's just going to keep getting harder and harder for people to pay $40 to $50 a year for features they get for free everywhere else, including the PC and the PS3.  I know for a fact that if Xbox Live is $100 next year I will not be renewing.  I'm glad I just renewed a couple of months ago so that if this rumor is true I still have a pretty long time before my account expires.

Oh im still in he forum.

And this is so amusing.

My internet connection is Cable.  And its extremely good, as I have already said. And if you dont get it Ill explain.  If you host a game you have a separate connection to each player that is in your game.  So for COD4 there are 16 people connecting to your Xbox through your connection.  If you connect to a server there is 1 connection to the server.

See, thats funny, cuz mine is dsl and I don't have nearly the problem you have with lag. Perhaps you should explore other ISP options.

Yes there are 2 people playing.  1 PERSON PAYING lol.  Honestly.

So, there are TWO people playing, you could just as easily share an account if it was really that big a deal to you...but i suppose you didn't think of that. honestly....

I just mentioned I wouldnt be using them as you mentioned them in the first place.  And as I said you can get them on the Internet for free, so when talking about a service you have to pay for, you shouldnt even be listing them as benefits.

Yes, but you can't get them on your console, I don't care what you can get on the internet free, unless you can use them on the 360, they are pointless to even bring up.

And your silly response to servers vs hosting your own games.  Yes you have to pay for the game.  But the game on the Xbox is not cheaper than the PS3 version.  Explain your point.

Easy, the 360 owners pay for it as well, we just don't get the dedicated servers. Anyway, this is a non issue,

I dont think you understand the basic of IT.  Its not really cross game chat.  Its just chat.  Just because people can be in different games doesnt make it anymore special.  Youre just hosting a chat session whilst playing a game.

No, I don't think YOU understand the "issue" it's crossgame chat, whether it;s chat or not, it still spans across games, this is something that PSN does not have...care to tell me why if it is "just chat"?

Well if you want to pay for features on Xbox that you can use on the Internet for free then you have more money than sense.

Who wants to sit next to their computor while using their xbox? I mean honestly...do you posess the ability to reason at all??? so far you have not shown me that you do.

I didnt say I didnt like Xbox live.  I love as I have already said my Xbox. However to pay for services that are free everywhere else is silly, I do think youre starting to agree as well. And if I do want to play games like Gears then I do have to play for live.  Whereas if I wanted to play Uncharted 2 online I dont have to pay.  And BTW that game is fantastic.

I doubt, it, with all the bitching an moaning about XBL I really don't believe you, if you DONT WANT TO PAY FOR THE "FREE" SERVICES< DONT BUY XBL. If you want to play gears on line, you have to pay for the service, to me $38.99 is a reasonable price to pay for an already awsome service. if it's not worth it to you, then stop paying for it. it's really so easy a caveman could do it!

So the 99 percent features on the console are clunky.  Youre the one that used them in your argument.  I have always said I wouldnt use them/  Someones losing it.

Erm, you were the one that brought up the 99% of the features of live...not me, so check yourself, you certainly are losing it.

Your last comment makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.  Maybe youre getting angry because your last post is just a compilation of contradictory statements from yor previoous post.

Yeah, not so much, It was quite clear what I meant, it's not my problem if you can't figure it out.

Anyway your opinions are beneath me and most life forms.  Ill leave you to your world.  Hope youve learned something today.

XD once again, the elitist attitude, it was nice finding out about your true character. Insulting people because they use reason to dismantle a failed attempt at an argument, yeah, I learned something about you today...

@ domicinator, the PSN browser is buggy at best, using facebook and Twitter is a royal pain from what I hear. on XBL they are dedicated apps. So yes,  Ican use them as an argument.I already said that crossgame chat was coming to PSN and it was a non issue, I was suprised that this guy was even bothering to bring it up.

As long as people have to pay a mere pittance to play with their friends online, I think they will. I am ok with paying $38.99 a year so I can play Halo 3 online with my friends, that right there is worth it. Would I like it to be free, absolutely, but as long as I must pay for it, I will gladly do so.

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

I wouldn't mind paying $8 a month. Xbox Live is a great service, and well worth money. Of course, PSN is expanding as time goes by, but still, XBL has copious amounts of content to justify the purchase. I also don't think they'll bump up the price, either.

This is what I like about the HD consoles. PS3, in my opinion, has better exclusives, but Xbox 360 has the better online service.

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

When its free, cause when its free it will be live less and not make me want to play games online.

i'm not sure what I would be willing to pay for live. I will say that this gen a 360 was my first console. i felt cheated that i couldn't play online without paying more money but also felt that $50 was too much for me (by principle, i have more than enough money in the bank) and decided to buy a ps3 instead. so whatever dollar amount i'm willing to pay, it is less than the current $50/year.

I wouldn't say buggy.  I check my Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, etc. on PS3 all the time.  Is it cumbersome?  If you're going to actually try to type anything to anyone on the controller, that's a resounding YES!!!  (Same problem on the Xbox 360)  However, you can plug a standard keyboard into the PS3, which is also worth mentioning as an enhancement to the free PSN service.  As far as I know the Xbox does not allow you to do this.  I have never tried it on either, but I know for a fact that it works on PS3.

As far as these items being dedicated apps on Xbox 360, yes you're right.  And that's cool.  But is it any more or less cool than checking the real Facebook and Twitter?  Hell, I think the easiest way to do it is just bookmark both those sites on your phone, and that's the way I access them both the most.

Again--not saying Xbox Live isn't a great service.  I'm just saying that it was already getting hard to justify the cost, and the upgrades they're coming out with in the near future don't seem to warrant a price hike.  The one thing I can say is that they're finally going to have 1080p video, which I believe is something PSN has always had.  (I will mention that the PS3 has lots of FREE 1080p content, while Xbox Live nickel and dimes you for just about everything aside from Inside Xbox and Major's Minute, none of which are in HD.)

Friends lists is not the question but more how you interact with it.

Actually, with all due respect of course, I think YOUR comparison is a bit too cerebral.  First of all XMB and NXE are the way we interface with our respective consoles.  Period.  Doesn't matter if one is technically an architecture and one is a functionality.  (I'm not even sure I agree with that statement anyway.)  And they both do the same exact thing. In fact, if you compare the way the two controllers work, they both interact with their interfaces virtually the same way.  The only difference is that the PS3 controller has a PS button in the middle and uses shapes on the other buttons instead of letters.  O is almost always the back button while B is the back button on the Xbox and they're both in the same place on the controller.  X is usually to select on PS3, while A is to select on 360....again, both in the same place on the controller.  You get the point.

PS Store is not only a certain spot you can go to on XMB but is also integrated into several different places.  Yes, they all point back to PS Store, and that's not a whole lot different from how Marketplace works.  Actually, pound for pound, I feel that Marketplace is a lot more cluttered and unorganized than PS Store.  But in the end, they're both just ways to get you to spend money.  PS Store may be a "website" but it sure doesn't feel or function like one.  And neither does Live for that matter.

I see virtually no difference in how I interact with friends other than the no party thing.  Once cross game chat is introduced, I think that little dilemma will be solved, and I have heard it's going to happen sooner rather than later.  And really, what are parties on Xbox Live other than a visual representation of the people you're talking to?  But back to my point--I can still see who's doing what on my friends list on PSN just like on Live, I can still send them messages, compare my trophies to theirs, see what they're playing at the moment, etc. etc.  Again, other than cross game chat, no difference.  And if Sony said I could pay $50 to have cross game chat added to my account, I would not pay it.

In my eyes, and this is just my opinion, it really all comes down to Netflix.  Sony simply does not have any kind of instant streaming service like that.  If Netflix instant streaming selection didn't completely suck, it would be the killer app on the 360.  Unfortunately, once you start your account, you realize that the really good stuff on Netflix can only be had via snail mail on a DVD or BluRay.

All in all, the two consoles have pretty identical services and interfaces.  There may have been a $50 difference in quality at one point, but there sure isn't now.  I think the amount of reaction we're seeing on the internet to even the possibility of Live going up in cost is proof that many people agree.

And for the record, just for everyone who is now going to flame me, I love my 360 and play it quite often.  I am not a fanboy of either console.  As you can see in my sig, I own both, and have a lot more hours logged into the 360.

And how does that compare to checking it on your computor? It's more clunky on PSN isn't it? Eithor way, the apps for XBL are specially designed to work seamlessly with the 360. The keyboard is a silly thing to bring up because if I want to check my facebook inbetween Halo3 matches, all I need to do is flip over to the facebook app, and use my keypad. I will be back playing Halo by the time you have opened your browser, loaded Facebook, and picked up your keyboard to log in. Same with twitter. I would love to see a web browser on the 360, but specialized apps make more sense for a gaming console because they are more streamlined.

Unless you have a phone with a real browser on it using facebook and twitter are a pain in the butt, not to mention you have to pay for the web service, no I will stick with my PC...and soon, my 360 for facebook.

I'm not saying you are wrong, however, I can easily justify XBL. Halo3, and friends. Something which PSN does not have (non of my friends have a PS3) Nobody ever said there would be a price hike (except for Pactor...but you know how that goes). If the price did go up, I would find it hard to bring myself to pay for XBL, but as long as I can get it for $38.99, I will.
