Forums - Sales - Results from World of Goo pay-what-you-want experiment

Not so great. $115,000 of revenue is okay, except that Paypal takes about 15% of that. Cheapasses who paid less than $0.30 actually cost 2D Boy money, and it turns out that the vast majority of purchasers were cheapasses. I'd suggest next time at least set a minimum price that covers financial and distribution costs. It doesn't seem fair for serious purchasers to subsidize penny freeloaders.

On the bright side, Steam sales saw a huge boost and WiiWare a modest boost. 2D Boy consider it successful enough to extend the promotion to the 25th. If you're still interested in grabbing a copy you have a few days left, but please, pay enough that you aren't a liability for 2D Boy.

Edit:

That article and the post I based upon it are extremely misleading. Read the whole thread and this Eurogamer article if you want something closer to the truth.

Ouch! I forgot about how much paypal sucks, I payed $2 so I guess they got a little bit from that.

I paid $2 as well.. so I guess I covered a few cheapasses there..

there're a lot more cheapasses out there than they assume.

but i think cheapasses are born from the fact that games are just far too expensive. i believe that they should have a flat 50% cut! that would put a dent against piracy too.

It's clear that it's a rare few people who will pay one red cent more than they have to for a product. This donation style business model can work, you just have to set a floor price that covers your variable costs.

How severely would it have impacted the number of downloads if 2D Boy had set a minimum price of $1.00? I'd bet that their unit sales would decline less than 10% but their revenues would go up about 50%.

Stop being pessimistic, the developers themselves described it as "huge success".

They got 100.000$ extra, for doing nothing but removing the price of the game!

Even if they would have earned very little, the game is already finished, probably they wouldn't have got much money from selling it for $20 anyways.

I think it's perfectly fair to donate 0.01$...

And they don't have to be called "cheapasses".

I don't see the problem. It's still better than hacking the game. I personally didn't bought the game by lack of interest (and credit card lol) but donating 0.01$ or 2$ is the same to me.

where does it say that actually cost 2dboy money for those who paid a penny? i couldnt find it anywhere. it only says that 2dboy didnt recieve any money, and that it costs PAYPAL money to process the transactions, not 2dboy.

that being said, i paid $2.50, and am gonna the wiiware version this thursday.

I agree, obviously 2Dboy expected this possibility to be used, they even risked that everyone will be an 1c-er, but they were fine with it, they were just playfully experimenting with the price, since there was no real risk.

I think it would have been better if they would have monetized it via affiliate offers, as opposed to just asking them to paypal any amount to them. It would have set a decent price floor of $0.50 for them.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
