Off topic question : Why is darthdevidem always typing in capitals? is his capslock button broke or does he has a sixth finger that automatically presses against it?

It's because anything that you type in capital letters is automatically true.

IT'S BECAUSE ANYTHING YOU TYPE IN CAPITAL LETTERS IS AUTOMATICALLY TRUE.

 FIXED =P

To be honest, if Sony decided to sell the PS3 without a controller or online capability to get it to the $299 price range I'm sure the there would be people endorsing that move as well.

The real question here isn't whether or not Sony has made a good decision for the consumer or not, but rather how willing some people are to make excuses after the fact for the company and console they support?

NJ5,
"It's because anything that you type in capital letters is automatically true."

==> LOL, it must be true too.

and bdbdbd, about Playstation Legacy,

I think it is more related with game serie like MGS/Tekken/GT vs Halo/PGR/Forza vs Mario/Zelda/Metroid than BC.

Do you really think any gamer will play GT4/Tekken5 when they can play GT5/Tekken6 .
To continue the playsation legacy, Sony need to release and secure their exclusive games : GT5/Tekken6 for example.

A lot of PS fans may switch to Xbox because GTA4/DMC4 are full multiplateform.
At the opposite, the lake of BC will not make the people switch on other console cause if the PS3 cannot play PS2 game, the Xbox360 and the Wii cannot too.

Time to Work !

^ LOL.

As for backwards compatability, I do think it's removal is annoying: at $400 the PS3 is still not really cheap enough to warrant the removal of such an important feature. That said, Sony may have a plan behind this move, and it's certainly not as bad as building a $600 console in the first place.

That's the real problem for Sony: the PS3 was a bad idea right from the drawing board, and there's nothing they can do about it now. All Sony can do now is damage control. The only other option would be to scrap PS3 entirely and release a brand-new system with a more traditional architecture (no cell and maybe no Blu-ray).

So your argument against the necessity of BC essentially boils down to you arguing that PS2 games aren't worth playing if there are sequels on the most recent system and that gamers should just live in the moment when playing games on a Sony system... *slaps forehead*...

Talk about metaphorically sawing off your own leg to try and swim faster. That's some great debating skills.

I still think the biggest problem with removing BC is that many consumers will not know it's been removed. From what I've seen, it's very easy to miss the statement regarding BC on the box. IMO, it's not worth the risk of alienating customers just to save a few million bucks. Sony is already $3+ billion in the hole, why not just spend the extra couple million and ensure the best possible experience?

Let's go straight to the point - there's no problem with removing the BC (other than what FishyJoe just said) if you look at that fact without regard to anything else which is happening with the PS3.

BUT if you look at the fact that Sony desperately needs to increase PS3 sales, and their measure is to cut a "core value" in order to cut the price, or sell more PS3 games or whatever the reason of the day is, that's the real problem right there, staring at your face.

"The 80 GB has BC" doesn't debunk or even change what I said, so please refrain from using that argument.

I didn't buy a PS3 to play PS2 games. I still have my PS2 and I will use that if I want to play those games, not my PS3. Some are just doing whatever they can it seems to knock Sony when it should be good news that there is a lower cost alternative out there for those on the fence waiting to jump on a PS3. Those with a large PS2 library will still have a PS2 and if they really want to play it on a PS3, they do have the option to get one that can play PS2 games.

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

I agree RolStoppable, completely,
A lot of people will just buy PES2008 on the PS2.

But there will be some people that will buy the PS3+PES2008 bundle too.
That was my point.

To Onimusha12 that saied,
""""So your argument against the necessity of BC essentially boils down to you arguing that PS2 games aren't worth playing if there are sequels on the most recent system and that gamers should just live in the moment when playing games on a Sony system... *slaps forehead*...

==> you are obviously looking for a fight,
I will try to make u better understand my point :
u buy a PS2 for the PS2 games
u buy a PS3 for the PS3 games (that are, sadly, not here right now !)
A lot of games, whatever they are old or not, are worth playing.
but when you have extensively played Tekken5 on your PS2, you may want to play Tekken6. And for this you will need to get a PS3 whatever the PS3 has BC or not.
Same for GTA4 or DMC4.

Personnaly, I'm ok with playing old games but I doubt the average customer feel the same.

In 2007, I played the ugly "system shock 1" that was released in 1993,
14 years ago ! I doubt a lot of people even know what is system shock and who is SHODAN ...
