As for backwards compatability, I do think it's removal is annoying: at $400 the PS3 is still not really cheap enough to warrant the removal of such an important feature. That said, Sony may have a plan behind this move, and it's certainly not as bad as building a $600 console in the first place.

That's the real problem for Sony: the PS3 was a bad idea right from the drawing board, and there's nothing they can do about it now. All Sony can do now is damage control. The only other option would be to scrap PS3 entirely and release a brand-new system with a more traditional architecture (no cell and maybe no Blu-ray).
