Modern Warfare 2 For PC

I recently broke news on a PC community member’s podcast that Modern Warfare 2 would be introducing a completely new backend infastructure called IWNET that would allow matchmaking for multiplayer games on PC. The news, by default, means no more browsing through a Server List for a server with the settings / ping you want among other things, and sent shockwaves through the hardcore PC community, leading to many more questions than answers as to ‘HOW’ this would work, and if it would really be better for the PC community as a whole.

Questions, assumptions, and speculation I intend to dispel.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is actually the biggest investment Infinity Ward has ever made into the PC version of our games. It’s also the most feature-rich PC version we’ve ever made. IWNET takes the benefits of dedicated servers and allows them to be utilized and accessed by every player, out of the box, while removing the barrier to entry for players unaware of how to maintain a server on their own.

How does it do this?

Matchmaking & Smoother Gameplay: When you want to player a multiplayer game on PC, in the past. You’d have to scroll through a Server Browser which listed every available server which was hosted by individual server admins. Each had their own private rules, mods, or ways of playing the game. Most players would also use the server browser to find just the best quality game (based on PING). With IWNET matchmaking, it takes all that into account for you. All you have to do is select the playlist (pre-set gametypes with custom rules) that fits the style of play you are in the mood for. When you do, it will automatically find you a game with the best performance, ping, and preferences based on your location and individual connection as well as matching you with players of your same SKILL. So you’re always guaranteed the best game performance for where you are and what connection you’re playing on as well as an equal game with other players of your same skill level, not rank, but skill level. It doesn’t mean you’ll just be thrown into a random game! It will put you in the game that will give you the smoothest gameplay possible without you having to manually find a server with the best ping.

Playlists and Private Matches: As I described above, Playlists are pre-set game modes and gametypes for public games. If you just want to jump into a public game of Search and Destroy or Hardcore Search and Destroy and you don’t care about fully customizing it, then you can utilize playlists to do that quickly for you. However, say you’re in a clan and you want to play a Clan match with another team, or you want to practice for an upcoming tournament that has specific rules in a private game. Then you can start a Private Match (which is essentially like running your own private server) where you have complete control over the rules, who can join, boot players you don’t want, and essentially control the entire game or tweak it to your liking. Once the rules are set, you can invite the other team in or just start it up with your clan to practice with the custom rules before the match. This now allows you to play custom games out of the box without the need to install mods, find a modded server with the rules you like, or worry about not being in control of the match.

Party System and Friendslist: Modern Warfare 2 on PC also makes it much easier if you want to party up with your friends, or again, with your clan for a match. You can utilize the friendslist to see when your friends are online, and invite them to your Party. A Party allows you to move from game to game as a group. It’s great for clan matches, because you can party of with your clan and move from public game to public game together. Or if you’re doing a scrim, party up and invite the other clan (who is in a party) and they’ll all join at once. Set up a private match together and play. It makes setting up scrims or games with friends easier and hassle free.

Cheat / Hack Free Games: The biggest benefit of using IWnet by far is the fact that you don’t have to worry about joining a server full of aim-bots, wallhacks, or cheaters. Or relying on the server admin of the server to constantly be monitoring, banning, and policing it. Modern Warfare 2 on PC allows us to control the quality of the game much more than ever before as well as utilizing the VAC (Valve-Anti-Cheat) system to keep games clean of hackers and cheaters.

All in all, IWNET adds a load of new features that the PC version of our games have never had before and allows us an infrastructure to continue to update and improve on the game post-launch.

That is some serious bullshit. Look at UT2004, it had matchmaking AND server lists with mods and shit. Who are they trying to bullshit? yes this is the console experience, and this is why the console experience is crap.

Oh great, here comes the angle that they're just trying to help and we should drop our pants for their pointless changes in regards to the gameinformer article. I think we'd be a little more accepting of the matchmaking if they weren't removing dedicated servers. The crap like no more modding/custom stuff just tips the scales even more.

Matchmaking/smoother gameplay - I don't get how that is better than dedicated servers in regards to pings and community. If you want to play just based on skill, you can play in clan matches. I'd rather have dedicated servers where I can play in the same server all the time with the a other regular players. I'd rather play with server regulars than have numerous people pelt my friends list with blank friend requests like what happens on PSN (and I would assume XBL too). Even if it makes playing a little quicker to get into, I don't see why it can't be in conjuction with dedicated servers.

Playlists and private matches - You can set your filters on your server list and find reliable servers that way. As for using the friendlist and forming a party, so what? Maybe the party thing would be nice for servers, but it's not like things are really lacking on the dedicated server front (apart from having to find a different one due to one being full). Lets look at Steam for example, I can use my friends list to see if a friend is playing a game (lets say Team Fortress 2). If he is, I can see what server he's in and join it. In regards to private matches, a dedicated server can put up a password as well as run specific match settings (I remember Counter-Strike matches and how running console commands would reset the whole server to run match settings).

Cheat/Hack free games - I'll only believe that when I see it. Not only that, but I want to see it remain cheat/hack free for years after it's out. Heck, people can exploit and such to get the upper hand on the consoles. So tell me, what are you going to do when you're in matchmaking and somebody is cheating? You're options wont be that much different than if you're using dedicated servers, except with dedicated servers an admin can kick/ban the player in question.

that's a lot of annoying bullshit, and L4D, even with all its consolitis issues, has features they claim are needed, WITH dedicated servers.

if you gather some friends to play together you can find a nice (and possibly empty) dedicated server and play there, or you might be running a server customized as you see fit, or change the config file if you wanna play with different rules.

I don't think I have been so annoyed recently as I'm right now. and he explains like we're all dumb and the "casual" player is dumb so he cannot enjoy the game, and even worse, they dismiss all the ones annoyed as if they were not fans of the game, FFS!

In regards to Left4Dead, I'm a little more accepting of it since you're playing with 3 other characters (I haven't played versus) as opposed to other games.

While I've only played Left4Dead during the free weekends, I'd often get a less than desirable ping and I'll be playing where there's a very noticeable delay between my shots and when the enemies reacted to it.

yeah, well, I usually don't play at random servers. I meant that you could basically choose what you want. if you have a dedicated server for your Steam group, when you're all ready to play in the lobby, you can actually join that server. only if you can't join any server that the game will force you to host a game in your machine. or you can use the matchmaking to join a game in progress and be put in a dedicated server. their "explanation" doesn't give any reason about why we couldn't have dedicated servers and their "new" features.

Sure, you'll need the knowledge to set up and/or rent your own server, but you don't need to know it to enjoy the game because you're joining the servers made by the people who DO know.

They added in a game browser of sorts now. Not great but it's pretty cool still. The initial bullshit they had with the automatic servering was bullshit.

Thanks Mr Community manager but you still do not answer how I play this game during a LAN, cos I am pretty sure IWNet is not going to running on my LAN this means we are ALL going to have to play this game on the internet.

Clearly MW2 will not be troubling CSS for the professional gamers league game of choice as most of the important matches will be held at a large LAN which pretty much excludes MW2. What makes this even more galling is one of the maps supplied to the PC community recently for World at War actually had a map credited to a gaming league.

So.... It's gonna be like a console game on PC?

WTH DO THEY THINK I GAME ON PC FOR?!?!?!

Sorry, but consoles is where da money is at. Piracy has just about killed the market viability on PCs.

That's actually false. How do truly good games like Valve and Blizzard games manage to sell such rediculous numbers? That's just because they are GOOD games. PC players have a much higher stndard than console players when it comes to games. Make a good game and it will be bought, fail and it will not or it will be pirated many times.

OR there's been a trend building up where more and more PC heavy genres are becoming more prelavent on consoles and now the console versions are actually getting better treatment. To me I see it as the consoles are a safer bet with better projections and far less piracy concerns.

Sure there is a much larger PC pool of viable consumers, however, every non-monthly fee generated game, has a VERY high % of piracy, even the good games. Whereas its almost zero on consoles and its easier to develop on consoles as they are a single architecture.

Dude, Shooters are nowhere near as popular on Consoles as they are on PC, and that's the genre that consoles got the most from PC.
