It has been different in America, ever since that kid accused him of innapropriate things. I dont see why people started dislikiong him after that, I've always liked his music, but some people lost faith in him or something.

as far as pop stars in the last 20 years go, yeah I'll bite.
Although I think Princess Di's death hit people pretty hard too, maybe harder.

People started disliking him primarily because his actions (paying the child to keep quiet) made him look guilty, and people in North America tend not to like sexual predators regardless of how famous they are.
Now, back on topic ... the fame of Michael Jackson can easily be demonstrated by going anywhere in the world and asking anyone if they have heard of Michael Jackson and whether they could name or sing a noteable portion of one of his songs; and it is likely that 95% of people would be able to do this. You might get similar results with the Beatles, but you'd be lucky to get 25% of people in North America who could name any song by Bob Marley (and that would go down in most other regions of the world).

I think the Beatles are better and bigger. Most people knew MJ because he was a black guy trying to be white and he was acussed of being a pedophile, or at least this boosted his popularity(not in the good way).
Also, Freddie Mercury deserves to be more famous just because he was a million times better and I think in music, not cheap celebrity stuff(Britney, Paris Hilton belong to this group), the beatles, the rolling stones and elvis will be more remembered.
