"The internet came alive like never before as people around the world logged on to follow the stunning news of Michael Jackson's death".

Word of Jackson’s death jolted nearly everyone, from a young man in Colombia who was named after the King of Pop, to Malaysians who named a soy drink for him, to a generation of people around the world who have tried, in vain, to moonwalk.

The number of Jackson tracks being listened to on the internet radio Last FM leaped following his death

Michael Jackson Traffic Melts Entire Internet

Any doubts about Michael Jackson's megastardom should have ended after news of the singer's death tripped up Google and crashed AOL Instant Messenger, Wikipedia, TMZ and, of course, Twitter. A survey of the epic traffic:

  • Leading news websites saw traffic surge to 4.2 million visitors per minute from around 2.75 million visitors per minute, according to Akamai.
  • CNN's traffic grew fivefold in one hour and the site clocked 20 million pageviews.
  • Twitter had its biggest spike in traffic, to 5,000 tweets per second, since Barack Obama's election as president, according to co-founder Biz Stone.
  • Facebook status updates tripled.
  • AOL Instant Messenger went down for 40 minutes.
  • TMZ, which broke the news of Jackson's death, crashed several times amid a surge of traffic.
  • The LA Times, which got early confirmation of the death, went down, as well.
  • For about half an hour, Michael Jackson queries weren't working on Google News.
  • Wikipedia froze amid an edit war on Jackson's page.

Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' Sells Out Worldwide

The King of Pop is still alive--through his fans. Michael Jackson's forthcoming tour documentary This Is It has sold out worldwide!

Over 1,600 screenings have sold out around the world, two weeks ahead of its release, and experts predict it will bring in nearly $250,000 million dollars.

The film is set to open on October 28th for two weeks only in Los Angeles, London, New York and Berlin, Germany.

The movie has already sold out more than 1,000 showtimes on Fandango alone. It's currently the top-selling film on Fandango, representing 27% of weekly ticket sales on the site.

"Advance tickets for This Is It are selling at an extraordinary pace,” says Rick Butler, Chief Operating Officer for Fandango. “Theater owners are posting additional showtimes on multiple screens to meet the demand.

"At this point in the film’s sales cycle, This Is It is outpacing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Star Trek as one of our top pre-sellers of the year.”

Did you purchase advance tickets for the movie? Do you think it's going to live up to the buzz?
No entertainer before or after him will have the same impact on the world! Was he the biggest star?

“It’s horrible news, so unexpected,” the Italian actress Sophia Loren told The Associated Press by telephone. “The world has lost an icon and music has lost treasures. He wrote songs that generations of yesterday, today and tomorrow will all keep on singing. What he wrote was mazing.”

Michael Jackson was one of the only (if not the only) true international superstars the world has ever known, and the combination of his massive success and the bizarre sideshow life has made him one of the most famous people who has ever lived. At this point in time a lot of the super success of Michael Jackson post-mortem has been from a new found acceptance of him from people who were sickened by who Michael Jackson became.

I once saw a pretty in depth analysis of musicians and bands performance past their prime which tried to analyze how popular Michael Jackson would have been had his insanity not ruined his career; the conclusion that they came to was that he could have remained one of the top 10 most popular musical acts in the world for decades after his prime without ever producing another album anyone wanted to hear.

I took my family to see "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" a couple of weeks ago. The trailer for "This is It" came on before the movie started. People were actually crying in the audience. I felt a little tingly, too. Anyway, yes.

Yes he is.

Maybe.

Elvis, Oprah, Michael Jordan, Obama, Tiger Woods, and others are might be more well known, not sure.

The beatles were definitely bigger in terms of musical impact and sales. But as an individual MJ is pretty much the at the top.

You would have to look to some of the giants of art like Shakespeare to find someone more well known.
