This just shows the shear power of Nintendo when a console version of Animal Crossing (a game aimed at handhelds) will probably sell over 4 million LTD  but is considered a failure and a new, somewhat dodgy IP, in Wii Music will sell over 3 million LTD. People go on about games like Uncharted 2 (great game) but sales wise, Nintendo is a total powerhouse when they consider Animal Crossing to be a sales failure...for Sony saleswise, it would be one of their greatest success on the PS3 to hit 4 million!

Not sure Animal Crossing is geared for handhelds. I think only one game in the franchise saw a handheld release, while the other games were all consoles. But I agree about the sales. I was saying this about Wii Music back when it was at 2 million. How in the hell could it be seen as a failure? Even Nintendo wasn't pleased with it. I guess lumping it in with other games with Wii in the title, is had the lowest sales. But millions sold, and millions made. Please. I don't see how it's a failure in any respect.

The series started on the Nintendo 64.


Yes.. they expected Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii-like numbers but the thing about Animal Crossing is that it's not that big outside of Japan.  The DS version may be huge in Japan but the anime series and overall tone and artstyle of the game helps with its Japanese appeal.  That and the fact that Japan supports the DS more than any relevant platform today and of course you're going to be largely disappointed with the acceptance of the Wii version.

Considering the PS3's install base of ~25 million worldwide, there's no reason why 4 million units sold should be considered a failure.
