Well the three biggest franchises are mario, pokemon and the sims in terms of raw numbers I believe.

@FarmLand

Pokemon sold 32 Million (Red/Blue version, counting yellow version 45 Million) in its prime without 1 bundle......thats a monster for you.

No game on this planet has done that (unless it was free, or ofcourse bundled)

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

DQ it's a well known fact. FF is #2 though.

I used to play craps for pokemon cards in middle school. Then sell them in class.. Had no idea what the game was about but I knew the worth of the cards!!!!!!

I'm not martin luther king. I don't have a dream. I have a plan

Sell a man a fish you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish you just ruined a perfect business opportunity.

We didn't emerge out of the stone age because we ran out of stones. Its time to be proactive not reactive.

Uh, Dragon Quest... duh.

Like everybody else mentioned, Dragon Quest. I actually think that if Nintendo and Square Enix succeed at making DQIX appeal to the West like they want, DQIX could actually outsell Final Fantasy XIII worldwide. Chances are though, they won't succeed to the levels they expect. Hopefully they do, I would love to see the series become bigger over here.

Dragon Quest is more popular in Japan than Final Fantasy, in the west they never had a chance...

1. The FF games came as Final Fantasy and the DQ games came as Dragon Warrior (until DQ8 on the PS2)
2. Square was more organized than Enix in the West.
3. When Square fought with Nintendo, Sony came along with a killer West plan that benefited both companies, the Playstation becoming the Nº1 brand on video games, and Square becoming the Nº1 JRPG company worldwide. Meanwhile Enix never did anything to expand Dragon Quest outside Japan, that was until the merger.
4. When Square Enix was founded, the changes became visible for the DQ franchise, they took the original name back in the west and dumped Dragon Warrior, and they shipped Dragon Quest VIII with the Final Fantasy XII demo, reaching a wider audience, and now they have an even bigger opportunity, DQ9 is on the DS and DQ10 is on the Wii, both Nintendo consoles and both widely popular, and Iwata promised to promote DQ in the West...

Of course, Pokemon beats both of them in every region... But that's another story...

As a former Japanese, I can tell DQ sells more than FF in Japan.

DQ8 holds the highest sales record in PS2 games in Japan. This simply says it outsold either FFX or FFXII.

FF is a bit more for grownups and DQ is more casual.

What do you mean by "former"? Also really DQ is considered casual in Japan? I always thought of the DQ game much more for a Niche audience and overall tougher than FF games. Maybe because I started out with FF games first.
