The point is, plenty of people owned a PS2 for only a couple of games, but that didn't stop 3rd parties to give the console enormous support. The same is probably true for the DS, also plenty of people who may own only a couple of games. When there is a fast growing installed base, 3rd parties notice this and start to heavily support this platform. In turn, more gamers will buy the system. 3rd parties make even more games and more people buy the system. Well, you know how this works. PS2, DS, Wii, they aren't that different. Lots of people who only own a couple or a handful of games, but also a lot of people who own 20+ games (not true for Wii yet, because the system is only out for a year). Certainly, the majority of people own only a few games, otherwise the attach rates would be insanely high. But there are enough gamers who buy 5-10 games a year to make games for 3rd parties profitable. |
Installed base isn't the whole story when it comes to third party support.
There's the fact that Nintendo is known to take the lion's share of sales on their consoles. It would be interesting if ioi had a feature in which game sales are broken down for each system by first/second party and third party games so we can see exactly what percentage of games for each system are third party games. Of course there would be weeks when big games like Halo 3 or Super Mario Galaxy would throw the numbers out but other weeks would make up for it.
Also some games simply sell better on certain systems regardless of installed base size. Look at Madden 08, even taking the current installed bases into consideration it sold a lot better on one system than the other. So it's likely third parties will look at whatever system is the best fit for their game rather than the installed base size.
And also like I mentioned in previous posts (some not in this thread) things like Wii Fit make the Wii's userbase more diverse than the 360's so it becomes much harder to make a game that appeals to the majority of the userbase. I know Madden was already mentioned but I'd still argue that the Wii's userbase is still much more diverse regardless.
Anyways I guess we'll see what kind of support the Wii will get in the future, I'm sure it's going to get some good third party games but I have my doubts that it'll dominate third party support of the best games like the PS2 did.
Thats go sports ski on the wii?
OT: I dont know how wii fit will catch on to hardcore gamers.
2008 end of year predictions:
PS3: 22M
360: 25M
wii: 40M

This really isn't a different phenomenon than Madden heads who only buy sports games. Obviously the typical Wii Fit user won't be playing Resident Evil 4: but they would play Wii Fitness 2, and any other health/exercise related games. Or anything third parties make that fits in the same genre. In other words, there are lots of gamer types that don't play Lost Planet-style games (Gran Turismo racing fanatics would be another example). It's not a new phenomenon. What happens is that other games come out in that genre to compete, and the market is fleshed out. If third parties really just sit there, scratch their heads, and literally can't figure out how to make a Wii fitness clone despite the fact that its graphics and playstyle are both simplistic, then the obvious problem is the third parties, because I think we're both agreeing there is a market here. And I'd agree that it's a possibility that third parties won't catch on. More than anything, Nintendogs' domination really proves this: Nintendogs is a game that sells largely to young girls, who (one can presume) have zero brand loyalty to Nintendo games, unlike the Mario and Zelda fanatics. Why is it still selling so well? Because apparently most video game designers have no clue how to appeal to young girls, but Nintendo does. It really is amazing to see the crap that's shoveled at girls time and time again, even with the amazing success of Nintendogs -- and again, I think it's simply because these video game companies are built around Final Fantasy/Resident Evil/Madden style games, and just cannot figure out how to adapt. |

I can only find the ski jump video. Go to youtube and put in wii fit ski.
WiiFit is *exactly* what Nintendo want.
- it sells consoles
- it sells software (WiiFit at least)
- it sells to non-gamers
- its going to be another "WiiSports" type game ("come to my house, try this out...")
90% of the challenge of getting someone to buy a piece of (console) software - is getting them to buy the console first. By using marketing and other tools, its possible to sell completely different software to these users (once they have the console).
The only people that suffer are "hard-core gamers". They are no longer special, consoles are no longer specifically their domain. Companies will make software that appeals to everyone - not just the hardcore.
Its the same old arguments all over again.
I can assure you, both Sony & MS would love to have WiiFit coming out in their product line. And if they did, 95% of the fans (for that console) would be happy about it.
Selling more consoles is never a bad thing.

How many mini-games in WiiFit are there?
So far we've seen:
-Headbutt Soccer Balls
-Get Ball into Hole
-Yoga
-Leaning from Side to Side
-Hula Hoop
-Skiing
and these are all within the box right?

I play on purchasing a wii for wii fit and big brain academy type games. You know mostly self improvement / party games than a game console. When it comes to typical games I don't see myself purchasing many wii games.
It amazes me that MS and Sony have yet to jump on this self improvement / gaming phenomenon (brain age etc). Really, I quit smoking after 10 years and want to become even more healthy. If buying a Nintendo helps me hurray.

I call Wii sports and Guitar Hero as comebacks to that,... I mean Guitar Hero is not a hardcore concept in any way, but look at it go, it is loved by gamers among all generalisations. Maybe singstar/buzz too but despite good sales i dont think they do manage to fit what i assume your "hardcore" encompasses. I'm sure at least some have bought it though.

A highly interesting tidbit from Wikipedia on Wii Fit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Fit
At the moment, according to Shigeru Miyamoto when speaking to IGN during an interview at E3 2007, there are currently no plans to integrate any WiiConnect24 functionality into Wii Fit.[13] He did note, however, that there could be possibilities to take advantage of the WiiConnect24 in the future, such as using the service to keep in contact with a doctor to help with rehabilitation, or with a fitness specialist to help with training exercises.[13]
Nintendo has struck gold, man. This is the beginning of phase 2 of their master plan for the gaming industry. Damn I love it!
Never doubt Wii Fit. Shigeru's behind it, dammit! Shigeru!

P.S.: Shigeru's in the mix, man! ShiGERu!
