@ SmokedHostage,
True, they started out as clones. :p But they haven't been clones for 25 years, like Pyro said. Besides, that was back in the early 80's, on extremely limited hardware. This is 2009.
And yeah, I get the whole 4-color-thing, but still. They could've chosen another character and kept it yellow. *cough*Toadette*cough*

In the Mario world, yes :P Also because you get green by mixing blue and yellow..
OMG Luigi is the love child of the toads confirmed!?!

no , but I remember playing a level with a boat that was flying in the sky, and you had to run after it and jump, idk I forgot how it was been 11 years since I played SNES

That was Super Mario Bros. 3 and was not an SNES game.

Cheebee,
Luigi is just a copy of Mario except for the color. That's the origin of the character. They also have the exact same abilities in this game, which is important not just for multiplayer, but for Super Guide.
Games that are oriented around multiplayer, Mario = Luigi. In games where you play different characters for different abilities, Luigi can jump higher.
Yvan and Wolley are the names of the Toads, btw. I would bet they have their own sound effects, and specific roles and interactions in the cutscenes like the cake kidnap scene in the last scan. So overall they should develop their own personalities.
New characters with a palette swap > Mario Party roster fluff that happens to be physically similar to Mario.
And isn't this just a tiny quibble anyways? Koopa Kids. Gorgeous 3D maps. Penguin and Propeller suits. 4-player. 80 levels.
I know Nintendo has stated that there is no unlockable characters, but I wish and hope you can unlock Miis by beating the game.
And I'm crazy hyped for this game, but keep remembering we haven't heard the music yet. We have just heard the NSMBDS theme. I expect them to play it safe, and maybe not give us an orchestrated Galaxy-quality score, but good music is a big part of the experience to me.
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Mario 1, colour change.
Mario 2, not a 'true Mario'. I'm not saying it's bad, I loved it but it is the odd one out.
Mario 3, colour change.
Super Mario World, was Luigi in it? I can't remember.
So it's been a colour change everytime Luigi has appeared in a 'true' 2D console Mario.
