Forums - Sony - PSP Go vs. Blu-Ray

Strange comparison yes...but I find Sony to be a little contradictory with what they're pushing out onto the market.

PSP Go: Download store only, no physical media. Is it that they're trying to start the digital media revolution to eventually do away with physical media? (Inevitable, if you ask me)

Blu-Ray: A PHYSICAL DISC. And yes, they're really pushing for consumers to get into this even more.

It's typical in the industry for the consumer to take up the brunt of failed hardware push-out exploits, but this is just boldfaced. It almost feels like they're making a mockery of consumers. But I guess that's just business right?

Edit: Do you find this to be contradictory?

Winner is Blu Ray.

It's not a contradiction. Both formats have a role to play now and in the future of the gaming industry.

^^ You mean like stepping stones? But simultaneously?? It's not just the gaming industry this applies to. Even if it has a role to play still doesn't mean it's not contradictory.

digital distribution makes more sense for a portable console than a home console.

Around the Network

I will awlays pick physical media over digital download.

You may not have heard, but Sony have said that there are two types of consumers when it come to distribution. One is more interested in having a tangible, physical media -- The other is more interested in a digital media, meaning they want their platforms connected to the internet most of the time.

Sony have also made it clear that, this time around, they won't miss one of the distribution ways like they lost the digital distribution side of music business back in the Walkman Vs iPod days.

So, they are not "making a mockery of consumers" like you may think of it. They just give consumers more options and choices.

^ I see. Makes sense, I was concerned with the way they marketed each piece of hardware. They showcase each as 'the future', when clearly only one will survive, therefore taking the consumer along for the ride. But like I said, that's business.

I see it as a good testing ground of sorts if/when non-physical media become more widespread. One eye on the present and one on the future so to speak. Even if the PSP Go isn't that successful it's bound to teach Sony a trick or two about digital distribution.

I think you could say the same thing about TV support; HDTV, LED, OLED, and 3D TVs are all heavily supported by Sony.

They push forward different types of products/media because contrary to popular beliefs, they may co-exit for a very long time -- like Music CDs and digitally distributed music services.

They simply don't want to miss out on anything.
