Forums - General - Help me buy a HD TV!!!

I just inherited some money and I want to splash out somewhat. This is where I need some good old CVG help. I want a PS3 and an HD TV. No one I know has a big-ass HD TV, so I'm not very knowledgeble on the matter. My requirements:

-Obviously the highest supported resoltion

-a Trusted brand would be nice

-highest end is not an option. Here in South Africa the price I'm looking for is 4x the price of a new PS3 (that ok by the way?)

-sometimes if it's too big then its overkill

If there's anything else then please let me know. This TV will probably be around for a LONG time, so it needs to be good. And I DEFINITELY want to WOW my guests ;P

Thanks for the help guys.

I'm not the best person to on these things but I know there are a few things you should specify:

  1. How much would you like to spend?
  2. What size TV are you looking for?
  3. How far away do you sit from your TV (helps determine the size and resolution)?
  4. Are you looking to purchase a complete home theater setup (surround sound speakers and receiver along with TV and PS3)?

I have a Sony XBR but I suggest you look into Samsung a friend has one and it looks great.

^_^

I'll look into the Samsung. Sony is a bit expensive for me in any case.

If my OP sounds vague, it's because I'm looking for suggestions. I guess in $ I have like $1200 or so.

WHAT ABOUT SECOND HAND?

Buy a Samsung 46 inch. I will. Probably.

I personally don't like second hand electronics. Mostly because I don't trust people and they are hard to inspect / test where as mechanical devices are very easy to inspect and test. However, you can save hundreds if not thousands by buying used.

As for size it depends on two things.

1) how far away you plan on sitting from the TV (use this for a rough guide - http://www.homeappliancegallery.com/images/articles/720p-1080p-viewing-distance-tv-size-chart.jpg )

2) how much money you want to spend.

For brands, I don't know what you have in South Africa but you could always list some brands and see what people have to say.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

This one is awesome. Dunno what price you might find it for though.

we get all the brands. SA is quite developed in the cities.

@skeezer
WOAH! I think I'm in love.

Just one more thing. Sound system. I'm not VERY picky about this, but woud like something good looking and decent. WHARFEDALE?

Sony (LCD), Samsung (LCD, LED), Panasonic (plasma) for TV.

As for sound, Klipsch, Harman/Kardon, JBL, and Onkyo are all great. God help you if you fall into the Bose hype.

Edit: If you like Blue touch of color over red (I sure do!)
