Forums - Sales - PS3>Wii In Japan this Week, DESPITE Wii Price Cut - thoughts!!??

It will be interesting to see what the Wii's tracking is with its price drop.

After all, there was not a lot of advance notice on the Wii drop ... and there are signs that it is selling in some markets better in the second week than in the first. Meanwhile, PS3 sales have been dropping each week after the price drop and slim introduction.

This will take some time to sort out.

actually ps3 sales have been steady for the last 3 weeks over 200k drops are minimal so it quite stable.

We are talking about Japan

Famtisu had something like 150k > 50k -->50k --> 37k (I might be missing a week).

I think we should probably also wait for Media Create hardware numbers.

They had the PS3 at only 39k last week, so if it dropped again this week, it could even be sub-30k on Media Create charts.

@ montana, read what ioi wrote, that is all

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

PS3 go!!!!

I'm frankly shocked at all the people who somehow believe that Wii sales will be dropping again after a mere 4 days of a lower price.. Come on people use your head. Why the hell would a seemingly rational company cut $50 off their console for a mere one week increase? I mean I still stand by what I said about the Wii price drop being a dumb move, but it's not THAT dumb!

Those who point to the PS3 for evidence of a fast drop, the PS3 had a new model which boosted sales to greater heights than there would have been had there been ONLY a price drop, so of course the dropoff will be larger, because the initial spike was also larger from the new model.

I think next week will be a virtual tie between the PS3 and Wii with Wii maybe having a slight edge. After that it'll be a matter of what moves more consoles, FFXIII or NSMB Wii, but I'm about 90% sure a 2-D Mario game is more popular and will drive more sales than FFXIII. Plus, Nintendo tends to have abnormally large holiday boosts (probably from all the parents waiting to buy Nintendo products for their children).

I was just about to suggest that you should read some of ioi's posts.  ioi says price cuts move hardware.

You are alone in your opinion that they do not.

That 3rd week was the week that ToV for PS3 which is most likely why it didn't have as big as a drop off from the previous week.

@smbu: Nop, that was the fourth week

1st week - Price cut + Redesign + Gundam Bundle. 150k
2nd week - 57k
3rd week - Tales of Vesperia launch. 50k
4th week - 50k
5th week - Current week, still unknown.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Why would PS3 sales on the 28th, 29th, and 30th be anything to write home about? Since when would Mon to Wed be some sales boom? And if people had been holding out for a PSP or Wii, they would have got one from Thu to Sun.
