That's what a lot of people used to say about DVD vs. Bluray, except now they simply replace the word "DVD" with "Netflix streaming".

No, that was UPSCALED DVD vs. Blu-Ray.  Which if you have a very good upscaler, again, the average viewer won't see much difference if any.

We've already gone over this a million times and it never changes the fact that DVD upscaled or not doesn't hold a candle to bluray no matter how often people try to perpetuate that lie.

Actually, you are wrong, and current trends support my prognosis. Blueray sales are plumeting, and digital distribution is expanding, this should indicate that the differance between Blueray and digital distribution is not sygnificant enough to give consumers a reason to choose Blueray over digital distribution. Also, since DVD sales have not plumeted as hard as Blueray, That would indicate that people just are not that interested in the minor differance in quality between an upconverted DVD and a Bluray.

My local Supermarket has removed its Blu Ray display for the Xmas period.

I asked where they were and was told "They will be back after Christmas. We dont sell enough of them to justify the shelf space during the holidays"

Jeez it really is dog eat dog at Xmas, they only had like a seven foot row of them.

I havn't bought a NEW dvd since 2006, sometimes I'll pick up an old film in HMV for £5.99 but other than that,, they're far to expensive. Films are crpa nowadays anyway :-\

@Seece

Stop shopping in HMV go to Tesco's.

DVD's more than a year old are usually 3 GBP or less. Thats about 5 BUCKS a movie.

Oh I go to Tesco's too, you're right the prices are great, but the selection is nothing compared to HMV.

Rich. We have the format wars, and a non-contender comes from behind to knock out the winner. Now that is irony.

LOL, this isn't irony. This is the way the universe works. It's always has been and always will be. In all sorts of business everywhere. Barnum and Bailies circus trounced by Circus De Soliel. Big Wood radio boxes by crappy transistor radios of Sony. TSR D&D by WotC MtG. Nintendo & Sega by Sony PS1. MS & Sony by Wii. The non contender that appeals to the consumer convience WINS. Ok yeah it is Irony, but one we should stop being surprised by and expect.

On another note. I don't like Walmart. I wouldn't be surpised that Walmarts business strategy of forcing companies and customers to expend more money to outside countries is part of the economical problems though not the sole reason. Regardless of personal opinion there is no denying that Walmart is a powerhouse of a company that can make or break companies. They have weight over the consumer and economy. With Walmart deciding to drop DVD support can only spell bad trouble for the medium.  I prefer digital mediums myself, but the validity of it is aweful due to the random bandwidth and limitations currently imposed in North America. I don't want to have to start paying extra money if I exceed my bandwidth watching movies. I don't want stutters because I may be with Cable internet service and it's peak time. I guess we will see what happens over the next few years. But wouldn't that be ashame for Blu Ray, so much effort, R&D, marketing push only to for it to get phased out just as it would have hit it's peak.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

they scaled my walmart's DVD/BR section back so much I gained 60 feet of DVD space and about 16 of BR... oh wait..

We just re-set movies for the holiday period.

Blu-Ray and DVD space were exactly the same.

I call BS (and I don't care for Sony but I'll side with them this time.)

It's just that simple.

I loled, then stopped reading. Walmart is not forcing anybody to shop there. And is therfore not forcing anybody to "expend more money to outside countries"

Well dvd's are overpriced imo. There's also a lot of rental services out there.
