Forums - Sony - Uncharted 2 can't/won't become a Killzone 2...

uncharted 2 wont have any issues that killzone 2 had in opening or legs in sales. i also think killzone 2 was average in gameplay and not the best graphics on a console period. uncharted 2 has the best graphics so far i think. :)

@heruamon, Uncharted 2 getting way better reviews then Killzone 2, Killzone 2's pre-order numbers were 500k worldwide, Uncharted 2 will probably have 320k pre-orders in just NA alone. Also add in the 250gb Uncharted 2 Bundle and it will = success.

So you're thinking it's going to do 1 million+ in week one...making it the 2nd best exclusive for the PS3 at the very least.

Where did he mention 1 million+ in week one?

I'm seeing no where.

My extrapolation..."320 pre-orders alone"...which means clsoe to 400K in sales in NA.  PS3 games usually perform much better in PAL than NA, so that's how I got to 1 million.  Also, I was awaiting some confirmation from him...

Uncharted launched at almost 3:1 in favour of Others (PAL), the ratio has since narrowed to a little less than 1.5:1. I think this narrowing trend would suggest Uncharted 2 should see almost the same numbers at launch in NA as in PAL. Ultimately U2 could perfom better in NA than PAL despite the lower install base. Uncharted does seem like a game with good NA appeal. If it launches with 400K in NA I don't see PAL getting 600K, maybe 500K, but more than likely pretty close to even with NA numbers.

Uncharted launched in the US to 32K sales. I'd say U2 geting anything over 300K in launch week is phreakin' awesome and a testament to the quality of the original. Heck 250K would be excellent.

One major flaw of the original article is the assumption that the PS3 needs U2 to have decent sales for the PS3 to sell well. News flash! PS3 is doing pretty well so far without U2. I think U2 has the potential to be one of the rare sequels that will boost hardware sales noticably, almost certainly it will do a better job than ODST at lifting HW sales on launch week. It is one of those titles that a good deal of Wii/Xbox owners would love to play, and having 2 Uncharted titles might just convince a few Wii/360 players to buy the dark console. I'm not sure whether it is a franchise that will draw PS2 owners into the PS3 generation, at least not at launch, it might have that effect during the holidays. U2 success will certainly help the PS3 this holidays but it isn't as pivotal as the OP would suggest. If anything U2 needs PS3 to have a good holiday season for it to massively outperform the original.

Got to say, despite any high hopes Sony (or others) might have had, KZ2 was always going to struggle in USA.

Most of it's potential audience was already committed to another platform, and even if KZ2 had been the best FPS ever (which it wasn't, although it's very, very good) it would have failed to sell better.

On paper, given the fact KZ2 is a very good FPS, you'd expect it to be on 4 or 5 Million. But that would need a far greater adoption in US.

It's interesting to note that on PS3, many FPS and similar titles seem to sell roughly the same in Us and Others. On 360, FPS and similar titles sell way more in US relative to Others sales.

And that skew will always (unless PS3 really starts to hit home in US) hold back big FPS on PS3.

We disagree a lot of the time, but this post very efficiently sums up my thoughts on shooter sales on consoles in general.

The PS3 has shown a great propensity to shift sports games and some other genres.  But if you're going to make an exclusive shooter the place to do it this generation is clearly the Xbox 360.

That said, anything other than HD multiplatform this generation is just stupid if you want to make a high-graphics game and you're not first party (or are getting a massive payout).

Hey!!!

Killzone2 is an awesome game and sold well imo considering is was a sequal in a series with less than stellar appeal at the time [I enjoyed liberation though. Nice and challenging PSP title. Gotta finish it one of these days]. It's more than doubled the sales of it's prequal and is nearing the two million mark.

It's not the 3-6Million seller some people were hoping for but hey!! It did well by it's series' standards.

It was a nice article. The really sad thing is that I always thought Uncharted was rated M.

This is the true definition of owning.

The reason KZ2 failed was due to a demo that showed off how broken the controls were. If KZ2 had the same controls of CoD4 it would have sold atleast 1mil more.

It failed? Since when?

That's not even the worst of it. Did 1 million people try the demo and decide not to buy KZ2 on the basis of the controls? That's a lot of people playing the demo. Or was it just some thousands of people who tried the demo and not like it and word of mouth spread to 1 million people convincing them not to buy?

Any way you slice it there is simply no way negative experience of the demo comes close to accounting for 1 million in lost sales. Couple hundred K max, maybe.

Edit: come to think of it, how many PS3 owning FPS fans DON'T have KZ2? I don't even like FPS much andve seriously considered getting KZ2, probably not gonna though.
