Forums - Nintendo - Was Wii's price ever a problem?

Well it seems that Wii sales have doubled in America to 150k, which really was suprising since it sold about that much year ago.(http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39719&console=&maker=&boxartz=1#)

Unlike Ps3, price has never been problem. So why did they cut price?Surely cutting price is standart thing when something is going wrong on gaming market, but in Japan price cut didin't seem to help much even with Wii fit + released.

So should Nintendo maybe start bringing some new games to markets or should they try something huge (Vitality sensors wtf).Or they are already satisfed with their billions and stop paying attention

Was Wii's price ever a problem?

Price was never the Wii's problem, but it was a reason behind the Wii's success, and now its competitors are closing in on that price point so Nintendo moved even lower down

I sort of agree with Sean Maelstrom in the sense that they didn't have a hit game for a while to keep sales at that price. With NSMB Wii, we'll see what happens now.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

They need to meet their projections (wich were quite big), plus recession, price drops from the other companies and the begining of the saturation in the market. Next E3'll be interesting I won't be surprised if Nintendo gives a sneak prev of their next system.

For a brand new console, the original $249 asking price was a bargain back in 2006 for those looking past bargain/value gaming (ie. buying a system a few years after debut at a significantly reduced hardware price when the soft library is well established and there are many quality "best hits" titles for sale at greatly reduced prices).

For those consumers, I have to question whether the $249 price tag was prohibitive back in 2006, or even in 2007 through most of 2008, when consumers were still hard pressed to find one at actual retail price off the shelf.

While the Wii is a special case in which many of the prior trends in console sales do not directly apply, there is still good reason to believe that the majority of the life time Wii console sales will be seen below $200, which is typical among the best selling console of each generation.

So while we didn't exactly see the Wii being sold out at $199, I still believe the drop will play a role in keeping the hardware moving consistently due to all the new sub $200 console consumers.

I suppose the big question of the effectiveness of the new price, along with the winter soft line up (which is solid and should not be used as an excuse for below expectation sales should that happen) will be answered by whether Nintendo hits its annual hardware projections.

Colored Wiis could have made the same impact as the price cut...

It went from affordable to more affordable, where the PS3 went from not-affordable to affordable so the pent up demand was a different situation. Also, HDTV penetration has drastically increased since the beginning of the generation - which may have an affect.

I'm almost willing to predict Nintendo will release their next console around 2011 - a moderately powerful HD console, while Sony and Microsoft will do theirs the same weekend in 2012.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

No. But the price cut is nice. Can't wait to see new Wii colors come out.

NINTENDO

nintendo forever . . .

HDTV didn't have an effect on the HD systems versus the Wii. HDTVs sell because they are wide and flat, not because of resolution.

There are more colours coming?
