When Eight Days and The Getaway were announced as cancelled, there was a big backlash from the gaming community. Both games were billed as tent-mark Playstation 3 games and as such had already developed a large following. Sony announced at the time that the games had been cancelled due to an overlap in the Playstation 3’s catalogue, and if you look at the system’s lineup today you can get an understanding for the thought process behind that decision. Simply put, the Playstation 3 offers more diversity than any other system available.
Really stop and think about the bases the Playstation 3 covers: Hardcore shooter games; you have Resistance 2 for your arcade shooting needs, Killzone 2 for your more hardcore shooting needs and the upcoming MAG for massive-online-scale shooting. Action adventures games; you have Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, a game some reviewers are touting as the pinnacle of its genre. Racing games; you have the seriously hardcore Gran Turismo 5, the more casual based Modnation Racers and the in-between Motorstorm: Pacific Rift. Family games; you have the popular Buzz! and Singstar franchises. Platform games; you have the excellent LittleBigPlanet and generation-erasing Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time. Kids games; you have the upcoming Eye Pet application.
I’m not listing all these titles for fun, I’m trying to show the diversity. Playstation 3 transcends generations, it’s never been truer that there is something for everyone; and it’s exactly why the PSone and Playstation 2 were such huge successes.
Not to discredit the competition, there is no doubt that the XBOX and Nintendo Wii provide games in the similar categories as I’ve listed above. In fact, the Wii probably does family games better. In the platforming category it has Super Mario Galaxy, arguably one of the best platform games of all time. However, the Wii falls short on providing explosive action games or hardcore shooters. It doesn’t have the complete diversity. The same can be said of the XBOX, which provides the Halo and Gears Of War franchise. But where are the kids titles, the diversity in racing games and the platforming franchises?
It’s diversity that Playstation is known for. There may be games from the above list that don’t appeal to you, but they appeal to someone, and it’s by marketing the Playstation brand as something for everyone that Sony get a catch-all.
With Motion Controllers, who knows, Sony might be able to catch the Wii Fit fitness market — aswell as the hardcore shooter market with a title like Killzone 2. It transcends gender and age barriers — something I’ve only recently took notice of.
Playstation isn’t a niche – it’s for everyone. And only Sony are striding in that direction.

Those are good games...but only if you own a PS3 and nothing else (if the other consoles aren't what you're looking for).
Umm...the PS3 hasn't been out for more 3 years, and there still aren't a lot of games that people talk about. The classmates in my game design class talk about the X360 and Wii more than the PS3; only one person brought up the PS3 Blu-Ray...until I pointed out that my laptop can play them
There isn't any Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, and whatnot that will attract customers; the games are too realistic, and if a game is too realistic and life-like, it CAN shun people away (I read about that in sociology class on marketing and advertising). Those kind of games have not seen their true potential on the PS3. My friends hardly talk about the PS3 except when they mention their boyfriends or husbands (most of my friends are girls, don't get me wrong, I have guys as friends, but I prefer having girls as friends because I get along better and I'm more understanding; I also work with them at the daycare I work at) have a PS3, they only have it for either sports or racing; that's about it.
One thing that the X360 and Wii have right now is brand recognition; PlayStation 1 and 2 had it, but it doesn't have the same effect anymore. Microsoft and Nintendo have stolen Sony's limelight with their new games, and Sony has shunned customers away with some games that they don't want or that are available on other consoles (multiplatform games they don't want meaning that they are the same games you can find on other consoles that are similar and/or games people don't want the console for); plus let us not forget about the zillions of SKUs that Sony has for the PS3. Talk about confusing customers...
And no, the PS3 is still considered expensive by a lot of people. Even a lady at work called the Wii as expensive for being $200 now. The current games may not appeal to everyone; they don't appeal to me except for FFXIII and FFXIV (which I'm getting for my PC instead). Plus the PSOne and PS2 were known for its diversity; Sony is trying to go after the X360's market (and somewhat for the Wii for its casuals) as most of Sony's games are similar to what the X360 offers.
It's an add-on for an existing add-on...plus it requires one add-on in order for the product and software to work
And no, this is just catch-up for not thinking of this first, and is blatant copying. People aren't stupid, you know. And the 'motion controls' for the Wand is motion TRACKING; the Eye TRACKS the controller's Orb in order to see which way the Wand points and moves about. It looks like a glow-stick with a color-changing ball attached to the top. Or a sci-fi microphone...
PlayStation IS NOT a niche, but the PS3 is. Go to your local GameStop or any similar store and ask the workers how many of the PS3's have sold on a day-by-day basis. Then ask the same thing about the Wii and X360.
