Forums - Gaming - Stardock Boss: “If Games For Windows Takes Over, I’m Done”

i wish the developers would give up the .net like developing and go back to making games like they should. c and opengl.
but all the nice tools probably make that a problem.
also this would help developers go on mac+linux game and remove lack windows feature that lock games into microsoft OS pcs.

I agree with this entirely.  A move over to Open GL and Open CL would help everyone that isn't Microsoft immensely.  So much of gaming occurs outside MS's little garden of Windows and the 360, and all of it is Open GL based.  The PS3, the Wii, the PSP, the DS, the iphon, the mac, linux, the ipod touch ect ect ect all open GL and soon Open CL for additional GPU acceleration outside of 3D graphics.  That MS keeps pushing Direct X based solutions hurts innovation across platforms and gaming in general.

I think most people would be quite happy with a system in which games are written in a standard language that can be used by the most OSes possible so that your OS choice would be determined by how well it does non gaming tasks.  Every time I have to suffer through using Vista just to play this or that GFW game it makes me rather unhappy since playing this or that restricted game is the only thing Vista is any good for.

This is a case of MS having a monopoly based not on quality, but on proprietary standards and purposely limiting interoperability.  That the number one argument most windows fanboys have is "its better because it has more games" goes to the heart of my point, the only reason Windows has the share it does is because MS works to make it as impossible as possible to switch through BS software limitations.

games for windows live does suck from what I can gather, but I don't even think he thinks it will actually take over. I think he is just showing his distaste for the service/corporate ripoff.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

I didn't know about the patches thing, it's even worse then

It's not a surprise that there's only one exclusive PC game that uses GFWL, and even the devs didn't want it

GFWL has a lot of problems, and most of them are related to the fact that it wasn't made for PCs and it's totally restricted to the Silver membership features. the fact that the lastest release was focused on putting the Marketplace in-game just show how committed they are to improving the service... for themselves.

You need to clarify that. GFW or do you especially mean the LIVE aspect of the games ?

Because there are tons of PC exclusive "Games For Windows"

Actually, .Net can be run on any OS that implements the CLR.  But .Net has nothing to do with GFW.  In fact I would be VERY surprised if any highly demanding 360 or PC game was coded using C#.  Mostly C++ and some C.

*facepalm* it was a comparison.

.net and basic-like are seen as school programming tools, they even draw the windows for you.

as for tools. microsoft direct x are good, but they are performance lost when you use them, also they are locked to windows PC.

opengl or CL are just as good, but they don't have the tools or debugging tools and easy of development it's not there.

but the use of them will wider the market and remove microsoft windows only games.

open gl 3.2 perfomance on linux it's impressive, i am able to render a halo 3 like game in 720p in a old celeron machine with nvidia 8400.

but developers go for easy of development (READ LAZY) instead of perfomance.

Consoles are becoming too much like PCs. On the Gamecube, I put a disc in and it worked. Now on the Wii I have to go through Channels, install system updates, and the internet connection keeps breaking. But it's even worse on the PS3/X360 where you have to do game installs, view adverts on menus, patch games etc.

He is right Games for Windows Live is piece of pointless crap that doesn't add anything to the games (unless you are achievment whore) and just adds additional complication to playing.

yep, GFWL. GFW is supposed to be a good thing, but apparently it wasn't really working (they changed it recently)

adverts? what this this adverts you talk about? i never seen any.

I thought steam sucked as it had you register your games to an account (so I guess locked to an account)...but GFWL sounds really worse... oh yeah you have gamerscore... yay...
