Forums - Gaming - For those saying that the PS3 with motion controls is the new Wii HD

When Phil Harrison left Sony he was remarkably candid about his frustration with SCE not realizing the importance of social gaming and it seems they still don't get it.  If creating the success of the Wii was a recipe it would be one part accessible controls and one part social gaming.  Social gaming as in people playing the system together in the livingroom as a family or with a group of friends.  Wii Sports examplified this experience and showed just how wildly successful such a gaming philosophy can be.

Now I've read statements from people proclaiming that the PS3 with motion controls will be a  "Wii HD" and I wonder if they like SCE seem to be missing the point of the Wii.  Here's a list of the launch games that Sony has announced for their motion controller.  Could one of those people calling the PS3 a "Wii HD" please tell us which of the games listed below will sell even 15 or 20 million copies and 10s of millions of PS3s.  Please tell us why people will choose them over Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort.  Also if your answer is graphics please explain to us why Wii Sports was still an amazing success considering its graphics are so simplistic.

Are these the games that examplify Nintendo's famous ads of families and friends sitting on a couch and playing together?  Which one of these games is the next Wii Sports and will be a compelling reason to spend an extra $100 to buy a PS3 over a Wii.

Who has said that the PS3 is the Wii HD? I like many people hope that Sony is able to take gesture controls in a new and refreshing direction. Unfortunately, Sony's launch lineup is more like a Wii knockoff. Maybe Microsoft will get it right.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Funny I haven't heard people confidently saying that PS3 motion controls will make it equivalent to a Wii HD, but OK.

And none of those listed games will likely sell 15 mil, no.  On the other hand when PS3 motion controls hit, PS3 will already have a LARGE userbase and it is just now starting to pick up its strongest momentum yet.  The question is, will motion controls contribute to the PS3 being able to remain viable longer than the other consoles.

If graphics REALLY don't matter, Wii can be viable forever.  If they matter just a bit, Wii may be due for an upgrade while PS3 will have horsepower and features (blu-ray, games, cam/networking, etc) sufficient to power it for a long, long time.

I still think Sony needs to improve its social/casual offerings, though LBP, Singstar and other efforts strike me as pretty rad.  They just never took off in popular awareness like Wii.  Partly because of the PS3's price.  PS2 managed to do ok, if we'll recall. ;)

whoa whats this all about?

You're actin' crazzzy man.

Nobody is saying that the ps3 with motion is LITERALLY a wii with HD graphics. They're just making an allusion, yaknow? Like, PS3 is the Beyonce of gaming, because they have the best games of all time!

Motion Party sounds just as good as Wii sports. You do know most of Nintendo success is from shovel ware right?

How long do you think the Wii will be on the market?  Two more years?  Three?  Four?  The PS3 might only be on the market another year or two after the Wii's successor comes out.  That is assuming that unlike all previous generations the first place console stops being manufactured and sold before its competition.

Now for the years that the Wii will remain on the market why would the vast blue ocean that Nintendo targeted and is still targeting choose the PS3 over the Wii considering the $100 price difference and Nintendo's very successful Wii branded games?

that's very uninformed of you sidious. They will continue to make ps3s well into the next generation

So it's not from social gaming?  If it's mostly from shovelware why is it that Nintendo's games are the top selling ones on the system?  Why aren't there two or three shovelware games at the very top of the list?  So would the PS3 be far more successful if Sony stopped making quality games and instead released tons of shovelware?

because they have the word "wii" in the title.

And because the boxes are really colorful

What do you know about these titles?

Let's wait and see.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.
