Forums - PC - L4D2 is $20 cheaper on PC than 360

Zenfolder don't bother arguing with Vlad, I've been down this road before with him. Basically he sees his opinion as truth and everyone else as a juvenile minded infant that can't possibly see how complex his favorite games are. He will just laugh ignorantly if you give him a list of the greatest console exclusive games and tell you how he plays deus ex every day since release. He thinks that everyone else should, like him, enjoy playing a game over and over again based exclusively off sporadic mods from a gaming community that has no guarantee of consistent output.

Honestly at this point I feel sorry for him, I think it would be horrible if I was so self indulgent that I was unable to enjoy newly released games and had to resort to playing decade old releases. Just the fact that he refuses to admit that console games have ever innovated in any way whatsoever should show you how blindly he follows his prejudices.

I feel as though the more publishers move towards consoles and put PC releases on the back burner the more hostile the PC community gets as they see their favorite franchises moving to a new medium. They have the same mentality that Nintendo fans had of square-enix for a while when they betrayed Nintendo and went to Sony.

Here I will list the biggest console exclusive games of this generation and I guarantee you that Vlad says that every single one of them is crap. MGS4, Killzone 2, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Halo 3, GoW2, Fable II, Super Mario Galaxy, LBP, SSBB, ToV, Demon Souls, Crackdown, Infamous, Twilight Princess, Ninja Gaiden 2, God of War 3, Forza 3, GT5, No More Heroes, FF13. I could keep going but that will do. The fact that a gamer can't find a single enjoyable game in that bunch is ridiculous.

edit: I edited out the last part cause I don't want to bring prior arguments into this.

So really, your only issue is with the reselling of used games individually, and not the rental of games, the borrowing of games, the trading of games, and the buying of used games at a place like gamestop?

Also, your rebuttles aren't very good. The reason they aren't very good, is because it's hard to have a rebuttle in this instance. You just have to create so much spin and confusion around the subject that you can pretend you are arguing a point, but really you are just stating an unpopular opinion, not even shared by the developers you so highly tout, and attempting to marginalize every factual point the detractors are making.

"Oh, legality doesn't matter, stores and the economy don't matter, everything you've said doesn't matter, really if the developer doesn't get 60 bucks everytime his game is sold, it's piracy."

That's wrong. Pirates are getting something for nothing. End of story. Let me know exactly which part of the used gaming industry you think it piracy so I can explain why you are wrong, better.

The person who sells his game is the person who is equal to the people selling a pirated version on the corner, they bought the game and are just selling it to others now. The person who buys the game is the pirate who either buys it off the guy on the corner or is the one dowloading it for free.

As for there being money exchange. There is money exchange in piracy. I can go to the black market and get a copy of a game for money so yes, there is money exchange in piracy too.

I can't say anythign about Uncharted 2 yet, haven't had the chance of playing. Mario Galaxy, SSB, LBP, and to an extent Uncharted are platformers or fighting games and don't really have a better equivalent on the PC since they can't really be made well, though many have tried. The equivalent of FPSes and many WRPGs on the consoles is the equivalent of platformers and fighters (without a controller on the PC), just very mediocre (LBP is a pretty shitty platformer  and the uniqueness of it has been on the PC for decades). Also I'm pretty happy playing my old games, it's not my fault I couldn't finish games like Gears 1 (I have a saved game half way thorugh chapter 5 for the past 2 years) because they are boring, simple, dumbed down, and ultimately just not as fun as games that came out decades ago. I also don'd give a damn about graphics so I'm fine with playing those old games.

So then what about stealth games like MGS, racers like Forza and GT, slashers like Ninja Gaiden and GOW and jrpgs. There are more genres but you get the point. The PC is good for you because apparently all you care about is fps games with good campaigns. For everyone else consoles provide something that pc's have simply not provided for a long time now.

Also on the multiplayer side of fps's some, not all, are just as complex as pc fps's and offer just as much competition. Try playing a pro in their respective games of Halo 3, GoW2, COD4 and so on, I gaurantee you get destroyed. Controllers require far more skill to aim well with than mouses, there is a major learning curve to getting good at shooting in a console fps. Although I admit this isn't true for all fps's since some developers dumb down the games by adding auto aim and magnetism but as far as Halo 3 and GoW2 I can tell you they have minimal assists. Just look at the rankings for the top teams on MLG, the top five teams are always there in some order because their skill is so far and above everyone else's.

For stealth, have you ever played Thief 2? Or how about NFS Hot Pursuit 2, depending on your defenitions of slasher, I'm still playing Diablo II or Witcher. JRPGs don't interest me, actually they do but the strategy part does, and they are just like turnbased ones, so please look at the Total War games or Civilization. If it's for the story then the list of adventure games with story are huge i numbers.

As for the pros please look at videos or try playing people in U2004 or Quake 3, there is a reason why epic slowed down UT3 by 30% for the consoles. It's because the consoles can't handle them. In fact even when they are slowed, FPSes need serious auto aim on the consoles. That's just sad right there. PC shooters have NO auto-aim, unless you set it and in single-player only. No auto-aim at all online.

I never said PC doesn't have those genres I said that they didn't have anything recently which looks true based off the games you listed. Another aspect is the fact that the big budget titles for these genres have been moving onto consoles. For example games like Heavy Rain or Alan Wake would have been almost guaranteed PC exclusives 9 years ago. Even if you can find similar titles to these on the PC you won't find anything nearly as high budget as those two.

I never said the PC pro's aren't good, all I'm saying is that the skill gap is just as high for the high quality console shooters as it is for the pc ones. Jump into the MLG playlist for Halo 3 and you will see the massive skill gap between players, even for what you term as a slow shooter like Halo.

And that's why I hate the HD consoles. They ruin games. They came out and all of th sudden good FPSes stopped being produced. Good RPGs ended (compare Morrowind to Oblivion to see what I mean) and any other cross-platform genre jsu went down the drain. As I said earlier, things liek RPGs and FPSes are about as good on consoles are platformers and fighting games are on the PC, which is pretty medicore.

Tit for tat. Consoel shave good platforming whiel the PC half asses them and the PC has good shooters and RPGs whiel the console shalf ass them. I canspend hours and pages elling of how wesome it is to have platformer/fighting on the PC and how you can plug in stuff and controllers and crap, in the end they are half-assed on the PC. Vice versa for the consoles and other genres.

The PC games are cheaper partly because of piracy, but PC games are also cheaper then Console games because of the license fee. The games in a sense subsidize the loss on the sale of the console. With PC's the manufacturer is in the business for a one time purchase and only incentive is to sell you accessories (printers, ink cartridges, productivity software, warranty plans, wifi routers, etc...)

The attach rate for both HD platforms probably has to equal about 7 games before the manufacturer begins making profit.
So how does used sales benefit consoles?
Since the majority of games that are sold back to stores are traded in as a form of payment because the cash value is usually about half, it encourages additional purchases. Many of these additional purchases come in the form as a new game sale, plus every time a used game is bought by a customer it gives the publisher an opportunity to sell more DLC and further increase the value of creating fans for future editions of the franchise.

Piracy is done more often then not as a trial system. What I mean is such as you saying I really want this new game that is out, but I really don't want to pay full price. So you either wait for the price to be what you think it should be or you just jump through some hoops and steal it. Right or wrong it is what it is. A good percentage of pirates wouldn't have bought the game at any price even if the legal cost was less then $5. But the majority of pirates will pay for the game if given the convenience of legal means and a fair price. This has been proven with services like Steam or even iTunes.

The used car analogy is spot on (Ford, Toyota, etc.) do not make anything from a used car sale. But it allows their dealers to sell a new car by taking in trades and most used car sales are high profit for the dealership allowing them to stay in business. Also with the re-sell it may make a lifetime customer out of the person who buys the used car. It also allows them to sell replacement parts in the future.

Actually no it's not. Because with cars you also pay for the materials such as metal, oil, etc. not an idea, which is what a game is. When you buy it's your metal and stuff.
