"For starters, combat is extremely stiff. Attacking is slow and glitchy, and the controls make it difficult to execute timely commands. Switching between spells and weapons requires holding certain buttons down and doing so on the fly is frustrating. However, this is slightly stifled thanks to some of the worst enemy AI ever. Dragons, giants, yetis, and strangely powerful rabbits are easily dispatched with a quick dash attack and subsequent retreats. The only way to dodge attacks are based on certain statistics (which barely make sense) making toe to toe combat almost impossible. Casting spells takes too long and it’s too expensive to rely on it as your primary attack."

Is he right? Are all these flaws apparent in the gameplay? If so, why would you guys on VGChartz continue playing a seemingly sub-par game?

I need some clarification here.........

Because the game isn't sub-par.  It's not without its flaws, but it isn't nearly the abortion he makes it out to be.

- Attacking is not "slow" or "glitchy".  I can be depending on whether you use a heavier weapon or not, but that's due to the weight of the weapon.  Weight is a stat for each piece of equipment.

- Switching between spells and weapons only requires you to hold down 'Z' and press - or + or just hit 'A' or 'B'.  I don't know what he's talking about there.  Weapon attacks are always assigned to 'A' and 'B', while magic attacks are - or + (with 'Z' held).

- Hand to hand combat is stat based, which isn't a bad thing.  And you can dodge.  Toe to toe combat is very possible - I'm a Fighter and that's all I've been doing.

- I do agree that casting spells takes a bit too long, but I wouldn't doubt that there's a way to increase casting speed for higher level Mages.

I don't think the reviewer really wanted to enjoy this game...

@ken there are passives that lower cast time but it lowers the damage its better to find the gem as you can stack the effects.

You could lower cast times to almost nothing. It does half the damage, but you can increase that again with other skills. I kill regular land dragons in under 10secs, before it would take about 2 minutes. My wind attack hits a dragon 250 damage at level 5 without the "Quick Cast" skill. With the quick cast skill it hits 190(also added the god hand skill that boosts wind.) I can use about 4 attacks though in the time it takes me 1. So in reality I'm hitting 190 x 4 vs 250. It works amazingly. It also makes leveling up MUCH faster.

Edit: You do use more MP but if you have Refresh Vials in your quick slot it doesn't really matter much.

Wait there is a gem? Please tell me. The quick cast skill takes up two slots so I would love a gem to free up for more skills.

I haven't seen anyone in this thread mention the game being finished yet, so you guys have been playing for way more than 25 hours I presume, but he says it is short.

He said the graphics are terrible too. Sheesh.

I know you guys wouldn't waste your time on a bad game, so what he is saying cannot be all true.

I mean, 3.0/10? C'mon.

It is short only when you don't finish it. If you truly want to get a hang of the game, you definately have to put a LOT of time into it. You could beat it in 15hrs, but if you want to do everything in it, and level up to areas where you can do some really cool things battle-wise as well as play online, you definately will be spending 50+ hrs.  The graphics are probably the worst thing it it, but they are also the least important. Basically, if you are a reviewer who is playing the game because you "have" to, you will finish the game in a very short time, and find the game to be really boring. If you are somebody who wants to perfect the game(because there is A LOT of customization) you will be playing the game 5 to 10 times more. The combat starts out really boring and slow, but once you customize everything to perfection it is truly fun. For example, if you read my earlier posts I mentioned magic being slow and hard to pull off. Now I'm enjoying it so much that I can choose what passive skills to put, and what spells to use. So yeah, that is my opinion on it. BTW, I don't listen to any "professional reviewer" anymore. I find my gaming tastes don't match anywhere near what they have.
