Forums - Microsoft - XBOX360 sales closing up on Wii sales?

@Huaxiong:

1&3. I'm actually very logical here. Problem is, that you made a claim that Wii pricecut is going hit 360 Arcade the most, because 360 Arcade is targeted at casuals. The reason you presented, was that Arcade lacks the internal storage and the hardcore wants DLC for their games.
This difference of sufficient storage between Arcade and Elite is true, but that's not the case with Wii and 360 Elite.
So, it was you who brought the Wii into the conversation in the first place.

2. If casuals are people who don't "know" about games, asking the salesman about which one is better, they are likely to go with Elite because it's "better". After all, the difference in price isn't much.

4. You can play the same games with Elite. Right? Why are casuals buying it for the games you mentioned? Why not other kind of games, like shooters or RPG:s? And why don't the hardcore buy it for their kids (oh, nvm).

In any case, with casual and hardcore, extremes as nerds and people that play very randomly, you're not taking the regular gamers into account, which is what the vast majority of gaming population is. The regular gamers are likely to go with what they see fit. If they think they need DLC, they're more likely to go Elite than Arcade.

@Huaxiong: Oh. I thought 360 Arcade had the same games as the other versions...

It does. But you need an HDD for the more hardcore games/downloads.

Huh.......Why do you need a hhd for games?

DLC. It's not necessary, but you get what I'm saying, no?

I don't have an arcade, so I'd like some clarification.  Does the built in memory in the arcade model and the use of a memory card allow the downloading of content?  Also, how many retail games can't be played without a hd?

256 MB of internal memory (Arcade) is no where near sufficient for downloading content. Also, I meant DLC for the games, not the games themselves, though if you want to install, it becomes an issue. I could be wrong, but casuals would buy the arcade with Arcade volume discs along with family games, while Hardcore gamers buy the elite with games like Halo 3, Gears of War, COD etc. because of the sufficient space of the HDD for DLC, as well as downloading games off the XBL Arcade service rather than buying them in disc volumes.

You are assuming that most gamers buying Halo 3, Gears of War, COD etc are also buying DLC which definitely isn't true. Most gamers are satisfied with original game and never bother downloading or buying DLC (a lot of them don't even download free DLC), almost all of which is horribly overpriced. 90% of the DLC is crap anyway so they don't lose much. DLC sales have NEVER reached even half of the games sales (GTA4 has probably highest attach rate ever for DLC but most 360 GTA4 owners haven't bought DLC) so there are probably many arcade owners buying Halo 3, COD, GoW.

There are a lot of arcade owners which buys Halo 3, COD, GoW just like other 360 owners. They just don't care about DLC which is not necessary for gaming anyway. And some of them buys HDD later on. Some gamers also buys arcade and then buys cheap used HDD.

And current Arcade has 512 MB of internal memory. Memory amount was changed during summer.

@Darth:
Even more so considering old fat PS3 were discounted between announce and actual cut, while for Wii this was left to resellers good will (see for example Gamestop Italy limited offer before the official announce of the cut).

@Huaxiong: So... A "casual gamer" gets Modern Warfare 2 with Arcade and a "hardcore" gamer Modern Warfare 2 and Elite? Gotcha.
Wii and PS3 both have internal memory for DLC, so obviously 360 Arcade is in all alone in the casual market.

The Wii suffered from the small storage space problem for a while, till Nintendo brought over SD sticks (I think they're called that) so you can DL onto them rather than the internal memory.

As for the Arcade vs. Elite purchases, I cleared that up in the previous post.

All you did was generalize.  Nothing has been cleared up, nor can the purchasing patterns of entire blocks of people be adequately described in anything shorter than a master's thesis.

@darthdevidem01
this.

@Alby: Except that if they have seen a 360 ad and go to a store to specifically get 360 because of the ad.

And also, considering it was retailers that originally revealed the Wii pricecut, it's more likely that Nintendo dealt in similar fashion that Sony did.
The old units, that a retailer bought with the old price and sold with the new, are likely to be compensated when making orders for new ones.

@Untamoi: He was talking about one extreme, not the general gaming population.

Thank you.

@de85: I was just stating my opinion, I'm not trying to put off anything as a fact. I meant that I stated my point, not "I shoved the facts in your face" or the sort.

Back to bdbdbd:

1 & 3. Yikes!...you got me there. I retract and apologize. +1 for you

4. I don't think many casual gamers play RPGs or shooters much...or am I wrong?

Basically, all that's confusing me now is why a casual would opt for an elite, when he can save money by buying an arcade with some family friendly games and an arcade volume. I don't know, that's how I feel, really.

Anyway, I guess this'll be resolved when we see how the Wii and 360 do after the Wii price cut.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

You may be right about this specific issue depending on the country: here in Italy MS didn't heavily advertise XB360 itself, actually it didn't at all since last Xmas, but games, and what's more clumsy, XB360 versions of multipltform games, so the unaware casuals enter the shop, say they'd like to play, for example, that Beatles game (by far the most advertised game for XB360 here, currently), chances are the greedy retailer, hoping to sell them, immediately or in future, more Wiimotes and Nunchucks, WM+, Balance Board, etc, will sell them a Wii.
