Well one of them is right here. Unlike Sony's executives and some posters around here, I can eat my crow when I'm mistaken. This is an actual price cut because the 40GB is being priced $100 lower than the $500/600 price point the PS3 had here at launch. I do wonder what they are going to do about the 60GBs that are still sitting on the shelves. Are they going to buy them back, because I doubt retailers are going to be willing to take the hit for them. The average consumer won't know that the 60GB model has the best PS2 BC, so they are going to look at the 80GB model as the better deal.

Actually I didn't think about you but it's good to know you have balls to come clean. Respect.

==> I expected the price drop from 600 to 500$ of the 80gb sku and
I was asking myself the same question ...
maybe a special offer : 60gb at 450$ ???

I can't expect others to come clean if I'm too cowardly to eat crow myself
Libellule, i don't know. Which why I am wondering. If the PS3 were selling like the PS2, I'd retailers would just have to eat the cost. I know that when the Slimline PS2 was released, retailers were stuck with the older model. Since Sony was doing so well, they had all the leverage. With the PS3, the retailers have the leverage.

Wierd...

I didn't ever say that Sony wouldn't drop the price, but I did argue that they could choose not to because it could look bad if they had multiple price cuts in a given year ...

Well, at the current exchange rate it should be $490 and many analysts believe that in the near future our dollar could be high enough that the correct exchange would be $475 or possibly $450 ...
I'm not complaining, it is understandable that all companies want to be (somewhat) conservative and Sony is (at the moment) the company that is ripping Canadians off the Least ... ($10 PS3, $55 XBox 360, $25 Wii)
Price dropped in US today for the 80 Gb, Its on Ebgames.com for $500. YAY 100 Posts.
Wow, once all the fanboy smoke clears, it is obvious that Sony has gotten serious real fast... An immediate price cut on the 80 wasn't even rumored to happen any time soon as there is still 60 gig stock out there. I think Sony realized that if they let this holiday go to the 360 (and the current sales trends were pointing to that reality) and didn't drop prices, they might have allowed Microsoft to take such a commanding global lead that the PS3 would never catch up and 3rd party exclusives would be jumping ship left and right...
One thing is really interesting about he new pricing and that is that it puts Microsoft in an interesting, and in my opinion, uncomfortable position. That is that they are now priced too close to the PS3. Yeah there are a lot more games on the 360 and that certainly helps, but there is no doubt that a lot of people would like to get the blue ray player as a bonus.... The Elite will be MORE than than the 40 gig PS3... Add to this the fact that the lowest priced 360 is still more than the Wii and it puts MS squished in between and historically this isn't the best place to be.
One thing is for sure -- the "arcade" and the new premium with 2 pack-ins is a nice start, but Mavel Ultimate and Forza 2 probably aren't going to win many over...
I suspect we will see something totally out of left field from Microsoft in the next 30 days...
Even if they cut the elite to $399 it has to go head to head with the PS3 40 gig. While I think it can, for the most part, fare well against the 40 gig unit, a whole lot of people are going to look at that blu-ray drive, scratch their chin and say hmm.... that PS3 is looking pretty attractive right now as there are now actually some games to play...
