wow thats crazy :

but my schooling, by the end of it, will have cost... about 8k, plus 16k so thats like 32k just for 2 years of college and 4 years of uni (even tho im only in my 2nd year at uni)

but then there's things like primary/secondary school education that im gonna expect to be free if and when the time ever comes for me to have kids, and the police force and emergency services staff who need to be paid... i know that half a million is a hell of a lot of money, and i will probably feel very bitter and angry within a few years of paying any of these taxes, but for now i can still say that as long as i have enough, money isnt everything. its not what you've got, its what you do with it.. which, funnily enough, ties in perfectly to this thread lol.

my brain hurts. on the one hand i think "i dont mind too much" but on the other i know the whole thing's a sham. meep.

you are talking income tax only. You still haven't included sales tax, property (and school) tax, and tax for anything else you might have to pay for. My property tax is going to be 5k/year. 3k of which is for elementary/high school even if I never have a child, or if I send him to private school. The town school taxes are so high in NY that the NY state government decided they would start the STAR program which essentially is a state rebate on your local town taxes. Obviously something is really screwed up. Rather than lower taxes, we now have to pay people who manage our rebate on our tax because it is too high.

Do you go to syracuse university?

No... he kinda does have  a right.

I mean Unemployment is paid by his taxes.

People should be angry when unemployment is spent on wasteful goods... because people who spend their government mandated money like that need to rely on the government longer then they should have.  Wasting taxpayer money.

It's why things like foodstamps should be replaced with just giving people food.  In general Welfare and unemployment needs to be more directed.

Stop dealing in money, and instead have the government deal in products and services with these things.

Just remember, you get what you pay for. To quote The Moon Is a Harsh Misteress 'There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch'.

Once out of school, if you make 37,400 pounds a year, and have a normal career span (30 yrs), you will have paid the govement 448,800 pounds in federal taxes. Not to mention any sort of additional taxes such as council taxes. Do you think your healthcare and schooling were worth almost half a million pounds you'dpay out?

That's kind of the argument tax payers look at. I'm glad your seeing our way. Again, it's something you can only really see through the veil when your actually there, paying taxes. Of course, no one wants, or likes, to pay taxes, but when we do, we want to make sure that it goes towards valid programs.

In America, we have some horribly inefficient programs such as Social Security - , a 8.0% Tax on income taken from every non-governmental, non-self employed person. The pension program acrues interest at 1.3% APY. For comparison, my savings account accrues at 2.2% APY, and a government pension plan (such as the state workers OPERS in Ohio) accrues at 10% on average.

I thought the Scottish were supposed to get free college.  Are you not going to a scottish school or do i have this mixed up?

I'm actually surprised at the level of venom I'm getting about my poor people rant. I'm in NO power of position here. If it were up to me, I wouldn't be working as a low level scrub in a store.

I am poor. I'm taking this low level job that I'm totally overqualified for because I need to do something to survive and its either this or take unemployment. I'm just hoping to hang tough until the economy recovers itself.

Some have said that I can't blame some because of the "image" of the american life where wealthy people can enjoy all these awesome things. But in real life its just an image, and I'd imagine that a lot of rich people got rich by not spending on stupid useless crap.

And to clarify to those who do not live in america: a lot of our products are "Free" or greatly reduced in price in order to attract the customer to get something (i.e. an iphone for 99 dollars). In order to get it for the reduced price, the customer has to sign a contract saying that they will pay for a service and continue to use the service under a contract for 2 years (usually).

In the credit world, you have to check to see how they pay their bills. If I get a free iphone, sign the contract, then bail out and never pay the bill, then apple and ATT lose out on thousands of dollars. So they protect themselves by reporting my name to the credit bureau, which will tank my credit.

So the next time I want to pull that stunt again, some guy at the store will check my credit and will see that my credit rating is dismal, meaning that I have a horrible record of paying my bills. If its horrible enough, then they will outright deny me from getting a free iphone because I'm likely to bail out and never pay the bill again.

Understand?

no not really

I used to. I should be heading back there soon though for more education. My work will pay for me to go to school so I might as well take advantage of it.

What used to bother me personally is when I worked in a grocery store when i still lived in flint Michigan. People would always, and I mean always buy alcoholic beverages and cigarettes with the cash portion of their EBT card then buy food for somebody else for cash and use the cash on drugs. Thats the norm there though, part of the reason why Michigan is in such a bad state besides gm being gone, its a welfare state.

What's worse if homeless people who, when given money, go buy alcohol and cigarettes. I've learned it's best not to give them money and either ignore them completely or buy them some food as a replacement.

Truer words have never been spoke.

Now, thanks to your way of thinking, let's stop all social programs that I have to pay for, so others can live.

I know you want to take my money and give it to others, but like you said, you have no right to tell me how to live my life, and what I spend my money on is my business.

no not really

seriously, you still don't get it?

Its like if I decided to buy a car and I put down 1000 dollars on a 10,000 dollar car. Then i drove off and left the state, effectively screwing the seller out of 9000 dollars. The seller can report my deed to the banks, and the banks will make sure that I will never be able to buy a car, get a checking account, get a credit card, etc. etc. ever again.

So that's why its necessary to check credit ratings. Its for big ticket items that the customer agrees to pay monthy over X months. The seller simply doesn't want to get screwed over and be down 9,000 dollars.

Anyways, when I was in school, I always thought it was a good idea for the government to help out the poor via welfare and whatnot.

Now, living out in the "real world" as it were, and seeing how some people live, seeing the choices they make, and seeing how they make incredibly stupid decisions with government subsidized money, it changes my perspective a little. Like I mentioned in the OP, I see people everyday make stupid decisions at my work, and like I mentioned in the OP, I really have no say in how they spend their money.

However, I can now see first hand how a lot of poor people are victims of their own stupid decisions and are dragging us down by finding loophopes and snaking our tax dollars.
