360 has not been 'maxed out', claims Forza dev

Game development is 'like Tetris', explains Turn 10's Dan Greenawalt.

Forza 3 is set to be one of the best-looking racers of the year, boasting realistic crash damage, a highly-detailed physics system and fluid 60 frames per second motion. But according to Turn 10's Dan Greenawalt, the game's director, there's still plenty of juice to be squeezed out of the Xbox 360.

"Have we maxed out the 360? Of course not," said Greenawalt, speaking to VideoGamer at a Microsoft event last week. "It's a really powerful system."

There's a common misconception about the way games are built, explained Greenawalt. Gamers will often speak of games failing to use the full power of a given console, but the reality of development is quite different.

"When it comes to hardware you always use 100 per cent. Even to make a little arcade game, you'd use 100 per cent of the hardware. But when you're first party, and when you've got a really clever development staff that's world class, hired from all over the industry, then you learn tricks. It's like Tetris.

"With Forza 2 we were the first game on the 360, at least that I know of, that could do 60 frames per second. And we did a lot of things wrong when we built our model. We did some things right, but just like a jigsaw puzzle, the first time you build it, it takes an hour, and the second time you build it, it takes half an hour. Eventually it just takes 15 minutes, because you learn how to build it faster."

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

First time anyone has explained game development so easily that anyone can understand it.

Every game uses 100%, but some devs are better are using that 100%.

Forza does alot of stuff. But I'm sure Forza 4 probably 3 years away, will look even better. Can the scenery get any better? I'm sure it can.

Do you reckon this guy would be scared if I kissed him??

Why is it that most game developers are seemingly unaware of this??

Of course.

There will never be a game that uses 100% of the hardware power.

I dunno, the scenery looks pretty good from the vids I've seen! I think they might keep Forza 4 for next gen and just release DLC to keep Forza 3 going until the end of the gen. Hopefully they'll add more cars on track for the next one, as they don't really need to improve much visually.

Many game developers claim to have maxed out a console - they do this of course to hype up their game. Unfortunately for them it makes it look like the devs are unaware that you can make code more efficient, thus making them look like pillocks. This forza dev however actually knows at least one thing about game development, which is always a plus

^Oh you are kissing him for actually getting it right for once! I understood what he was saying, I just got thrown off by what you said in reply is all

I thought you were stealthily trying to insult the man (just got done reading the "Gay Genetics" thread on here).

Did you fail to read the article?

Every game uses 100% of the hardware power but game developers learn too utilize that power much more efficiently as the generaton goes along. Therefore producing a better looking sequel every time.
