They just gave me a call and said "Why was Final Fantasy I good? GO!"

Actually I like Zelda a lot, but when A Link to the Past came out, I never played it again. None of the games I listed have a superior sequal, let alone one of the best games ever made as a sequal.

Well, fair enough in an odd way.

Mine goes like this (Following screwattacks rules):

1) Super Mario 3
2) Legend of Zelda
3) Metroid
4) Contra
5) Ninja Guiden
6) Final Fantasy
7) MC Kids
8) Duck Hunt
9) Dr. Mario
10) Ninja Turtles 2 the Arcade Game

To put it another way.  I notice that most people, yourself included, list Super Mario 3, but don't list Super Mario 1.   Super Mario 1 is the reason a good percentage of people bought a NES.   It could be argued that it is the most influencial and important game ever made, but there is no love for it on the lists here.  That is how I feel about Zelda.  It is hard for me to put a game in the top 10 of anything when I'd rather be playing 3 of its sequels.  I feel the same way about Metroid, Final Fantasy, and Castlevania.  All of which are/were great games.

Well Screw Attack's rules were one game per franchise. I still play SMB1 way more than I play SMB3, but I think SMB3 has to top the list. If it wasn't one game per franchise, SMB1 would be a close 2nd on my list, knocking off Monster Party (noooooo!)

The rules (not made up by me) were only one game from a series. And we're talking just NES games here.

How about not posting the list so we can watch the movie and find them out. Good thing I looked away really quick!

There's something very pure about FF1, and of course, rolling your own party at the beginning of the game and being stuck with it through the whole thing is a profoundly interesting gameplay element that no other FF game has.

Though FF1 actually has an interesting story, it's not at all a story-driven RPG like the other FF games.  This one is almost 100% combat-driven.  Probably why it has that very pure feeling.
