Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii 10 mln. or PS3 5 mln. in Japan. Who first?

I must admit, with the recent failure of both Super Robot Wars NEO and Crystal Chronicles and better than expected successes of Tekken, Winning Eleven and Bayonetta (and even the new Dragon Ball title) it does seem that maybe momentum for 3rd party titles at least is shifting firmly from Wii to PS3.

Wii should still win this bet, but not by as much of a margin as I first thought - I think my PS3 sales are pretty much dead on but Wii is tracking a lot lower so far. NSMB and the holidays will provide a boost and a large one, but with sales so sluggish in the buildup then things will be closer than I thought!

I personally think that we'll see more multiplats, like that capcom game.

Sengoku Basara 3.

ioi said; Japan doesn't care much for 3D platformers. A 2D Mario game will outsell a 3D Mario game by maybe as much as 4:1. New SMB Wii certainly won't be selling just to Galaxy buyers in Japan - it could bring in a potential ~2m new buyers.

This may be true, who knows, but to me common logic says that this is backwards. Are we basing this on DS game sales performance?
2d games on home consoles from yesteryear?

4:1? Wtf.

Common now. nsmbwii is a ds port of a shit mario game isnt it? I admit I must be way off here. Its just amazing to me how much I follow everything that is video games, but nsmbwii is so soooo far off my radar, that I could not give a damn.

it seems like a speck of dust compared to
FFXIII hugest game ever omg omg Boom megaton.

This gen is completely backwards. Up is down, black is white, and apparently nsmbwii is a game that will sell tons more than Final Fucking Fantasy.
Wow!!

I might actually be in shock here.

̶3̶R̶D̶   2ND! Place has never been so sweet.

No, Mario isn't a "port," it's not a "shit game," and he's always been bigger than Final Fantasy. I'm not sure how this is news to you...

i dont have any doubt that NSMB is going to sell a lot more than FFXIII, but i doubt it is going to bring in lot of new buyers to Wii..

NSMB Wii is a completely new and awesome Mario game. It's not a port of the DS title, it just uses the NSMB brand and visual style.

In favour of Sony: PS3 reached its first real sweet spot recently, so it has more potential for sales boosts.
Against Nintendo: Wii was affordable since the beginning and already had several Mario games, so die-hard Mario minions should already have bought one and a new Mario game, despite selling an awful lot of copies as it will, won't move many more consoles than usual.
In favour of Nintendo: we're talking about Japan, so, if we aren't Japanese gamers, and with strong Japanese market analysis skills too, we cannot really tell very much for sure.
