Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii 10 mln. or PS3 5 mln. in Japan. Who first?

There's usually 12 months between RGG releases except for 15 months for the transition from PS2 to PS3, I expect RGG4 around the end of Feb / beginning of March.

??? ?? 2009 PS3 Ryu ga Gotoku 4
Feb 26 2009 PS3 Ryu ga Gotoku 3
Mar 06 2008 PS3 Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan!
Dec 07 2006 PS2 Ryu ga Gotoku 2
Dec 08 2005 PS2 Ryu ga Gotoku

Right now I still think the Wii will win the race sometime in March. The PS3 only hope is to stay close and drag this until GT5 release....

Oh, ok i though you were stating the contrary.

Behold!  I'm doing a timely update for once.

A couple of notes:

1) As expected, last week's PS3 numbers were adjusted upwards by just under 4k.  Also, last week's Wii's sales have been reduced by about 500.  So... the gap after last week should be about 4500 greater than indicated in my update.

2) PS3's sales are actually down compared to the same week last year despite normally outselling 2008 several times over.  The reason: GTA IV.  This has also more than halved the PS3's yoy percentage increase for the race period.  Just goes to show you how much things can change when a console has a really good week and how insignificant these past few weeks have been in relation to what's coming.

Please check newbie's thread for week-to-week tracking of the ioi vs. ZorroX projection contest:

One small change ( which shoudn't change the outcome but will make the race a lot closer).
ioi had the Wii slightly outselling the PS3 starting last week and it doesn't look like it is shaping to be this way.
It looks like the PS3 will outsell the Wii until NSMBWii releases.

The PS3 should have a 140k lead or so at that time...

From the other thread, PS3 is leading by about 6K YTD. Are you saying PS3 will outsell Wii in November by 134K?

I'm saying right now the PS3 is closer to 5 millions than the Wii is from 10 millions.

BY the time NSMBWii releases the PS3 might be 130 or 140k closer.

PS3 : 3.76 millions units, 1.24 millions to go.

Wii : 8.67 millions, 1.33millions to go

And that's with last week VGChartz disagreeing with the rest of the tracking firms..

So NSMB Wii can't sell more than 140K Wiis?

NSMBWii will close the gap and probably put the Wii ahead  but it won't be enough to break the 10 mill and then FFXIII comes.

Anyway this is kind of a moot discussion, I don't think either of the console will break their milestone ( 10 mil for Wii, 5 mil for PS3) before March 2010 or so...

Yes, given current Jpn sales, they'd both need >1M sales in December to reach their goals. Just to have an idea I checked the charts and Wii last December did in Japan a little more than 560k, including the week ending 4 Jan 2009.

@ioi

It's possible... for PS3 too (FFXIII).

Wii: 27000 / 25000

|m-create|
PS3: 36,061 / 29,977

PS3 as expected had an increase, thanks to Tekken 6 and Bayonetta releases. Next week also is expected increase thanks to Winning Eleven 2010 bundle.
Wii also got slightly increase after some new games releases.

Overall, PS3 is performing very nice compared to last year`s sales and Wii sales after pricecut.

how much was the Winning Eleven 2010 bundle? 10k or 5k or even less?

PS3 had a nice little run of outselling Wii for each week since the slim release, it will probably do that once more and then after the release of Final Fantasy for Wii it wont do it again until FFXIII. Now things are really getting interesting. PS3 can only win if it somehow manages to keep up with Wii until Final Fantasy. No way Wii is hitting over 200k per week for more than one week this year. Same goes for PS3. You all have very high expectations.

I think people are still going to be suprised at Wii holiday sales - should hit over 200k per week for a couple of weeks at the end of December.

Of course, but even so Ail is right saying that whichever of the two arrives first most probably will reach its goal during Q1 2010, although I wouldn't be surprised if it happens before March. If this Xmas is as good as the most optimistic predictions, it could even happen during January.
