Forums - Microsoft - Are the sales figures for the Xbox 360 Accurate?

microsoft said there sales figures were the 360s install base and not how many had been sold and MS said the 360 has sold over 30 million which means the vgchart numbers are pretty accurate .

End of 2012 prediction:

xbox 360 : 73-75 million  playstation 3 : 72-74 million  wii : 104-105 million

Most hyped for :

Bioshock: infinte, The Last Of Us, Alan Wake's American Nightmare and Agent

I've asked the same question the OP asked and gotten seriously attacked for it. I truly believe that the number of unique 360 users is far less than the overall sales numbers would indicate. I've read endless articles, blogs, forum posts of people that have admitted that they have simply bought new console after new console due to RROD rather than having the defective unit fixed. Suckers. All of you. Shame on you for letting a company take advantage of you and your hard earned consumer $ with their awful quality assurance procedures. The 360 sales figures will forever be artificially inflated whether or not people want to admit it.

And you will forever be an ignorant fanboy.  If you can't accept our very likely explanations for the broken units, you don't have to, but that further shows just how desperate of a fanboy you truly are.

If I'm a fanboy for not getting suckered out of my money by a company with poor quality assurance, then yes, I'm a fanboy.  If Microsoft had ever released a redesigned model such as a slim model that corrected the design flaw of the original unit and virtually eliminated the RROD altogether, I would already own one.

I doubt it

Believe it!  My ONLY gripe with the 360 is the build quality.  As I stated, I work in QA, so it's a pet peeve of mine.  My company has a return rate of less than one tenth of one percent.  The only system this gen that I honestly dislike (other than maybe a couple of games) is one I actually own...the Wii.  Terrible graphics, unfulfilled promises of control (pre-WM+), lots of crap games...but that's a discussion for a different thread.  If it wasn't for my 5 yr. old, the Wii would be out the door.  The day MS redesigns the 360, I'm on it.

Keep this in mind when reading what I type...

I've been gaming longer than many of you have been alive.

Now, to point out some of your mistakes

Even if one person owned all the 360's that had been sold, its install base would be the same. Because you own 2 360's, you add 2 to the 360's installed base.

Technicalities out of the way, consider this - the 360 has a much higher attach ratio (ratio of software to hardware sales) than either the PS3 or Wii. Taken from this weeks data, the consoles have the following attach ratio
PS3 6.24
Wii 6.26
360 7.93

I present to you an opposing theory - Microsoft's fast response to customer service issues and the extension to the 3 year warranty has prevented what you have stated from occuring.

that depends really, we have archivements whores that buy cheap  game to raise their gamerscore.

even a console with a smaller userbase can have higher attach ratio.

a console with havea 10 users but each buy ten game, than other have the same userbase buy they just buy one game.

recently most of games except fps are selling slightly better ps3 eeven with the smaller userbase.

Why people buy games doesn't detract from the fact games have been sold.
And yes. In the past 3 weeks most multiplats have sold better on the PS3.

M$ should be able to track users thru XBL...although some might have mutliple accounts...dunno why, but maybe.

Care to explain why Batman:Arkham Assylum sold more on 360 than ps3 considering the fact that ps3 has exclusive content?

and the fact that Halo:ODST in its first weeks blew away anything on ps3, seems to me ps3 owners need to play games instead of watching blu-ray

Xbox 360 is overtracked. It sold about 10mil. PS3 sold about 40mil (so PS3 was undertracked).

Aren't you shorting the PS3 another 10 milion sold?  I thought it was 50 million and slightly ahead of Wii.

The PS3 is getting another price cut to $150 next week and it'll sell, maybe beat the Wii in no time.
