Forums - Nintendo - Dead Space: Extraction may be the best rail shooter on Wii

So I got the weekly box of games yesterday, a day late- and was surprised to see a title I didn't expect for a week. Inside was a copy of Dead Space: Extraction, a game I have been moderately interested in for the last few months.

The first thing you will notice about this game is the budget. EA clearly spared no expense making this graphical engine shine. The lighting in particular is nothing short of stunning, a feat almost never achieved on Wii.  The interface is crisp clean and futuristic. There were times I forgot I was playing the Wii, where games are so often hacked together with little care. Graphically this was a labour of love. Things shine especially in the darker levels and on NPC's textures and movements.

The sound is a really mixed bag though, on one hand the FX, music, is top notch. On the other hand some of the voice acting is terrible. The intro conversation is both lame and a great example of terrible voice acting. Thankfully that especially bad sounding character dies quickly, but still it takes a way from the story.

The story is really where this one is at. It is very story driven in a way that sets it apart from most other rail-shooters. It is enthralling, and clearly not thrown together, but carefully made to fit Dead Space. That is one thing is game does quite well, give off the same feeling as the first game, simply with a more fast paced action oriented feel. It really pulls you in.

The gameplay itself is fun, dismemberment works quite well and is fun. Tilting the Wiimote to shoot alternate works well and can be used to fun results. The camera is a bit too shaky by default, but that can be adjusted. The experience is thus far quite fun, and more immersive than HoD/RE. The one downside to this story driven gameplay is that the replay value maybe lower for some players, though that remains to be seen.

In conclusion this is a solid package for Wii owners, especially fans of the HD offering it so closely replicated. Sure I would have prefered a TPS, but I'm far less bummed than I was before. EA did a kick ass job making what may be the best rail shooter on Wii. If you ask me this one just blows away the competition.

Feel free and ask any questions you may have. I am just past the 3rd stage at the moment.

Nice to receive some care of EA. I'm interested to know the length, about the multiplayer and replayability. These are very important to rail shooters.

Thanks for not marking spoilers.

Spoilers? If you mean like that a guy early on who is irritating dies (without telling you who it is)? Give me a break. I gave away far less about the game than most reviewers. I guess some people will bitch an moan about anything .

Best rail shooter on Wii = hottest chick at fat camp?

I kid I kid, I love the ladies.

Edit: Need to learn to type.

I just bought the game and I am very surprised. I purchased Dead Space on steam last week and had a great time with it. Extraction seems to complete the game, and the environments are the same. Moreover, there are several path to choose. There are a lot of enemies to shoot at. fun !

Just got the game, playing it now instead of ODST which hasn't arrived yet. I'm just past the introduction and the voice acting in the pal version is actually pretty good imo( I like UK accent better then American anyway).

NVM it indeed is pretty bad when they don't have their masks on.

The graphics are indeed amazing, less jaggies then I thought it would have.

Those who have the game, how far have you progressed? How is weapon advancement? Thus far I haven't really been able to see how well implemented the upgrade mechanic is. Also does this game qualify for the worst intro ever or what? When they flashed the logo I almost laughed, luckily it starts getting better quickly.

In the levels, you get flashing blue items. These are upgrades for the guns.

Oh btw, iirc, old news said there were no flamethrower. This is wrong

I've been more into the game and it's indeed very fun. Only complaint is that you can't change your weapons in game and adapt to the situation :/ Somehow I just got the electric cuter and ist's a blast, it's better than any previous gun to put the necromorph in pieces. Oh weird thing you can unlock some quite long stories called 'issues', but this is once again damn fixed bad piece of artwork/comic with voice acting behind. Seems Ubisoft gave idea to everyone with Red Steel...

I'm def getting this game next week and I think it will give RE:DSC a run for its money - which I'll be picking up in November.
