Forums - General - Yeesh, some people really do live in the dark ages. This is abuse.

Bill Gates is a single liberal atheist, and has given more to charity than anybody else in the world. And he didn't do it in the name of atheism or in the name of any idea or religion or group or anything. He didn't even do it out of a love of God or a fear of Hell. He did it because he wants to help real people here now today. The alleged religious monopoly on charity is a joke.

I just thought I'd throw that out there.

I haven't watched the video in the OP, and don't think I want to. I kinda wanna puke just reading about it.

To quote Leviticus properly you need to know ancient ancient ancient Hebrew, not English translations of Greek translations of semi-ancient Hebrew translations of ancient ancient Hebrew. And after doing so, it all comes down to the word "tehovah" and whether you translate it as meaning simply "unclean" or meaning "an abomination!" And then you need to decide if it's the same type of "tehovah" as men having long hair, women having short hair, or women wearing their hair down. Those are discussed with the same exact word: "tehovah." It's a tricky word, and some people decide that the homosexuality passage refers to the most evil abomination, while the hairdo passages are irrelevant cultural things that can be ignored thousands of years later. Same exact single word though.

And Ezekiel specifically asks God why he destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, and God specifically tells Ezekiel he did so because they were too selfish and didn't help their poor. God doesn't even mention sexuality.

And the one Epistle about homosexuality is actually claiming it's a sin to worship at a church where they force everybody to have bisexual orgies (as prayer) against their will. I think even modern homosexuals would say that group rape is not a good form of prayer. Nobody's really citing that passage anymore anyway. It's all about Leviticus, which is the most ancient and irrelevant of the very few anti-gay passages in the Bible.

And these are the reasons why in the late 19th century the whole western world stopped referring to homosexuality as a sin that must be punished with death, torture, and/or imprisonment, and started referring to it as a mental disorder that must be punished with psychological abuse, twisted cures and experiments, and/or imprisonment in a hospital. The scientific and legal communities realized that these people might be weird, but religions that wanted to kill them were even weirder. Luckily we've made even more progress since then (and the APA has stopped referring to homosexuality as a mental disorder since 1973), and now most educated people realize they're not even weird, just... different. I mean, hell, they used to kill and beat people for being left-handed. 'Cuz that was Satan's hand. THAT IS DUMB.

What i always thought was interesting is the Catholic Churches stance on exorcism.

They'll still do exorcisms. However the person has to go to a psychologist first and the psychologist as to say there is nothing wrong with them psychologist wise and are in fact possessed or something.

Bill Gates is actually an Agnostic.  He's a lot like our early presidents.

He's an Agnostic that still goes to church every once in a while.

Warren Buffet I think is an atheist though.

And do some psychologists actually agree to let them go through with it?

Every once in a while I think.  I mean if the psychologist can't diagnoss them with anything chances are they're faking... or it's something where letting an "exorcism" happen won't hurt.

I mean Placebos work afterall.

Ah.  I didn't know he was agnostic.  He can sound pretty damn atheist in interviews every once in a while.  Maybe he goes back and forth and just can't tell, like a true agnostic.  Well I think my point still works, since most of Bill Gate's charity's money comes from Warren Buffet's atheist donations, and since agnostics don't do good deeds out of fear of hell either.

I'd hope Christians don't donate to charity out of fear of hell either.  So much as christianity kidna brings you up in a "Hey these people did a lot of charity" mindset.

Even if you grow up in a shitty enviroment with selfish parents...  you've at least got this third party thing, religion talking about helping the poor and stuff.

They should exercise themselves from their ''Christian'' demons first i say!!

Oh I don't mean to imply that all Christians do all good deeds out of fear.  But they can.  And if they're not good, they will be punished forever.

Atheists/agnostics don't even have that as a possibility.  And if they're not good, they don't get good birthday presents.

And there's always the Jungian idea that religious or not, all good deeds are done out of sexual desire.
