Forums - General - Yeesh, some people really do live in the dark ages. This is abuse.

This is so primitive... I don't feel like commenting furthur though. Hopefully, like with any other injustices, it will be fought until the end. Sure there will be extremists that will never accept it (just like there are still racists) but most of the world would have moved on and accepted it.

Bill Gates is a single liberal atheist, and has given more to charity than anybody else in the world. And he didn't do it in the name of atheism or in the name of any idea or religion or group or anything. He didn't even do it out of a love of God or a fear of Hell. He did it because he wants to help real people here now today. The alleged religious monopoly on charity is a joke.

I just thought I'd throw that out there.

I haven't watched the video in the OP, and don't think I want to. I kinda wanna puke just reading about it.

Bill Gates is actually an Agnostic.  He's a lot like our early presidents.

He's an Agnostic that still goes to church every once in a while.

Warren Buffet I think is an atheist though.

Ah.  I didn't know he was agnostic.  He can sound pretty damn atheist in interviews every once in a while.  Maybe he goes back and forth and just can't tell, like a true agnostic.  Well I think my point still works, since most of Bill Gate's charity's money comes from Warren Buffet's atheist donations, and since agnostics don't do good deeds out of fear of hell either.

I'd hope Christians don't donate to charity out of fear of hell either.  So much as christianity kidna brings you up in a "Hey these people did a lot of charity" mindset.

Even if you grow up in a shitty enviroment with selfish parents...  you've at least got this third party thing, religion talking about helping the poor and stuff.

Oh I don't mean to imply that all Christians do all good deeds out of fear.  But they can.  And if they're not good, they will be punished forever.

Atheists/agnostics don't even have that as a possibility.  And if they're not good, they don't get good birthday presents.

And there's always the Jungian idea that religious or not, all good deeds are done out of sexual desire.

It also should probably be noted that Bill Gates was pretty influenced by Christianity by the moral messages.  He states as much in interviews, it's why he does still go to church occasionally. (Though very rarely.)

Really though I think everyones reasons for good deeds very.  With Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.... their biggest motivator seems to be their value in hard work.

Not that they wouldn't do ANY charity, but the reason why they both plan to give away more of their fortunes is they believe their fortunes would ruin their families, that their sons and further offspring would become lazy and not make their own way.

They want to leave they're children with only a little bit of money because they think it's best for their children.

That and with Warren Buffet it's not about the money anyway... if you every read about Buffet it's hilarious how much he doesn't eleveate his lifestyle.

What i always thought was interesting is the Catholic Churches stance on exorcism.

They'll still do exorcisms. However the person has to go to a psychologist first and the psychologist as to say there is nothing wrong with them psychologist wise and are in fact possessed or something.

And do some psychologists actually agree to let them go through with it?

Every once in a while I think.  I mean if the psychologist can't diagnoss them with anything chances are they're faking... or it's something where letting an "exorcism" happen won't hurt.

I mean Placebos work afterall.

Yeah I suppose the placebo effect would go a long way to helping someone that was convinced it would work.

Possibly... But considering how deeply psychologically afflicted people often attribute the voices in their head to God, I'm not sure how benign a placebo effect suggesting the notion that god personally healed you through an exorcism might be.

So being the kindest soul on earth and not believing in God will send you to hell?

Nice to know how caring the Lord is.

I'm one. An atheist that is.

So really the whole thing is doubly ridiculous in my eyes - basically on the one hand I see someone with what appears to be potential psychological disorders while on the other I see believers incorrectly believing that a) there is a sin in the first place and b) that they have spiritual and moral rights to intervene.

I find myself raising my eyebrow and murmuring 'fascinating' in an impartial manner.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

From what Ive heard the catholic church has priest that do these things, as well as scientists that are priests too and such. Ive heard that if they cant find a mental dissease that has the sympthoms the "posessed" guy has, then they should use the exorcism. Anyway, I think catholic exorcism are way less common and dont happen for things like homosexuality and arent as violent and crazy like the one in the video. They are very carefull to keep their religion as something serious and dont be seen as fanatics.

dtewi: I used to be in a catholic school, it was kinda liberal though, I think its mostly because in my country the great mayority is catholic, anyway, I never though the riituals were so important and I believed in god and jesus, but the growing up things made me realize that those beliefs may have been wrong, that, added to the stupid prejudments, people guiding their life with a book and stupid crazy actions like the ones in the video make me critizisce religions even if I think they have a good thing to them, some in the philosofical part.

So, I would call my self an agnostic, I dont know if there is a god, maybe there is after all, but religion doesnt convince me and blindly believing is something I cant do, Id rather take the good from chistianity, budhism, etc and leave out the things that I think are wrong. As I cant say I know that god doesnt exist, no one can truly say that god exists for sure, after all nobody is really sure about it.

I also think most people fear religion and only behave good because their church tells them to, not doubting anything may be guided by other means other than faith, and have stupid reasons to hate minorities because of an ancient book that god didnt write.

Yeah. It's the whole "the only way to the Father is through Me" verse in the Bible. The "Me" is refering to Jesus of course.

So, while good deeds are great and fantastic, only belief and faith will get you into heaven. That's what Christians believe.
