Forums - Nintendo - Wii Price Cut Confirmed?

After contacting Nintendo I'm almost certain the price cut is just to make way for an NSMB Wii bundle

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I agree that Slim may have a role, but without rumours about a cut furtherly affecting sales, Wii could still afford doing without a cut this Xmas and actually cut at some point in 2010. Even without a cut, Wii manages to outsell XB360 immediately after a cut, so its first place is still safe for a long time, as even a mighty Slim must reach XB360 first, before attacking Wii. But obviously, there are factors like contract obligations and the need to keep a minimum momentum, so, if rumours add to increased competition and together affect sales, then Nintendo could be forced to react. Pure and simple competition looked, up until now, not enough fiery to force Ninty to an immediate reaction.

The price cut has little to do with competition. It has to do with Nintendo upping the production of the Wii and now it has to continue to sell numbers close to those that in order to fulfill contract obligations to suppliers and contracted deals with unions (if Unions work similar to the U.S. in this way, I don't really know)...

These aren't exact factors, but Nintendo had to arrange for supplies, shipping, and labor for all those Wii consoles they were selling. The cost of paying the minimums v. lowering the price to up sales a little and meet the minimums, probably has more to do with it.

This is a smart post, why haven't I friended you yet

Very good point. This might be the biggest reason to cut the wii price. Meeting contracts with suppliers is very important for any company.

id love to see you prove that the wii price cut wouldnt have happened if Slim hadnt happened.

to me its clear the falling sales of the wii have much more to do with it

It would be very unlike Nintendo to make such an important policy decision based on two weeks of sales data.

If, on the other hand, you mean that Nintendo has just been waiting for the PS3 to drop to announce their own drop (which obviouisly is exactly what MS has been doing) then one is left to wonder why Nintendo has not responded to any other price drop this gen.

If Nintendo is dropping its price it has far more to do with six months of lower than expected sales than it does the price of the Slim or how the slim has sold in its opening weeks.

if there is a price in usa, that will the same thing in europe I suppose... the wii's sells are diving in europe and japon too! I thing the wii price droop is real if tendo wants to complete their predictions for the fiscal year... In europe the ps3 slim is making a lot of noise, everyone is talking about ps3 slim... I continue to think nintendo need a price cut around the world , after three years, it's a normal cycle for a system... ( the ps2 also needed a price cut)

@ astrosmash

thats excatly what im saying. its hatmoza who thinks this price cut was triggered by the Slim

nintendo fanboy, but the good kind

proud soldier of nintopia

It will make a differance and maybe sales will increase 100k a week at the most i think. It will still be number one at crimbo again yey

I confirm: after a long time PS3 is advertised again quite often here in Italy. For XB360 they are advertising quite often that Beatles game, saying "it's on XB360", but omitting it's on other platforms too and adding in the end that XB360 is available at 199€, but, to avoid being fined for misleading advertising, adding the disclaimer that game and console may be sold separately. All as usual Redmond style. MS: your money, our passion.
