Forums - Nintendo - Unofficial Conjecture Thread for Generation 5 Pokemon games

Caution: Really, Really Long List Ahead

Ok, before I begin with my ideas I'd like to apologize in advance to the mods that might lock this thread for its potential for overly vocal debate... I wasn't trying to start an argument; only discussion... So please, bear that in mind when you consider banning me...

Now that that's out of the way, here are my ideas:

Things I would keep:

Weather Patterns (nice touch)

The Recently Expanded Day and Night Cycle (welcome back)

The Separation of Move Stat Type from PKMN Move Type (brilliant)

Dynamic Values (the very bread-and-butter of the Pokemon Universe)

Mystery Gift (*beep*)

Things I would change:

The Turn-Based Nature of Battles (boring)

Field Moves (they take up too much space)

Battle Animations (Flamethrower outta Typhlosion's crotch, I don't think so)

Lack of Realism in Damage Calculation (there should be no way that any Pokemon could easily win if a Hyper Beam hits them)

Automatic Challenges by Looking at/Talking to a Trainer (dude, I just wanna talk, is that too much to ask?)

Things I would be rid of entirely:

Fatherless Heroes (seriously, the fact that Brendan/May had a father in Norman/Birch was one of only two things I liked about Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald; the other is in bold)

Cliched Bad Guys (my favorite thing about the games in Orre was that Team Cipher defied explanation... and logic)

The Sausage-Fest That is The Pokemon Scientific Community (would it kill these people to design a FEMALE Pokemon Professor/Scientist Archetype?)

Quirky Rivals (why can't we get more Rivals like Sil... er, Soul?)

Towns/Cities That Feel Too Small (only 4 buildings in the starting town? seriously?)

Story Progression That is, For The Most Part, Linear (please let it branch off somewhere, I'm begging you)

The Seeming Lack of an Origin For The Heroes (if you think it would be too much disk space, just use a tarot reading; that way, you can be just as vague as you want to be, without leaving too much to the imagination)

The Shallow Eye-Candy Sensibilities of The Shining Pokemon (if you're going to look different, you've gotta feel different)

Glitches That Ruin The Game For Everybody (Missingno was the mistake of a lifetime; Miyahon is telling you to get a clue, Tajiri-san)

The Global Terminal (the Wi-Fi club should suffice for long-distance trading)

Friend Codes (do I need a reason for this?)

Things I would replace what didn't work for me with:

A Dynamic Battle System (real-time strategy + collision detection + environmental hazards + realistic damage calculation = a brave new world for Pokemon battle fans)

An Adaptation System (a practical alternative to field moves which serves to make the Pokemon world more accessible from the start, at the cost of use while fainted; if you don't have a Pokemon that has the proper adaptation for the terrain, i.e. lavawalk for magma-covered floors, you instantly white out; if this should happen while in battle, you lose the battle AND white out)

The Aforementioned Tarot Reading at The Start of Your Adventure (I have to establish an origin for the player character, if only a vague one)

Major Characters Who More Than Serve Their Purpose (bad guys you love to hate, rivals who have enough depth to satisfy that itch they haven't scratched since Generation 2, Pokemon Professors that know what they're talking about, and have a lot to say, et cetera)

Shining Pokemon That Serve as More Than Eye-Candy (do I really have to repeat the reason why?)

Multiple Endings to The Initial Arc (which provide major repercussions for the post-scenario... if you live to have one... just kidding... or am I?)

A Sense of Expanse to The In-Game Communities (even the small towns won't feel so small if I get my way)

New Functionality For The Wi-Fi Club (trade long-distance safely and anonymously without the need for Friend Codes)

Trade With Any Trainer (in-game or otherwise)

Request Trade With X-Button, Challenge With Y-Button, A-Button to Accept/Chat/Select, B-Button to Reject/Cancel/Unselect (you'll get used to it)

Things I would add for the fun of it:

Trainer Talents (from fun little skills that grant situational bonuses to potentially gamebreaking talents that change the way you play the game)

Wireless Interactions in the Overworld (instead of just certain places; no need for a Wireless Club to trade locally, just meet a friend in-game to trade, chat, and battle)

New Pokemon (duh)

A National Dex With 750+ Species (variety is the spice o' life, people)

Shadow Pokemon And The Means to Identify, Trade For, And Purify Them (I'm going for the maximum degree of insanity here; oh and by the way, you can't snag unless you are law... or crooked... or both)

Multiple Player Avatars With Different Goals (and 5 Trainer Card upgrades total for completing these goals)

End of List

I know this is a lot of stuff, but with a new generation should come new innovations, right? While some of this stuff may sound unreasonable now, in 3 or 4 years time, your expectations will be just as high as mine... I would be delighted to see both your ideas, and maybe some reactions to mine... You may post now if you'd like... Try to keep things civil, though: I may be tripping land mines as it is...

Less HM. Red and Blue had 5, HeartGold and SoulSilver now have 9. It's not as fun to have 1/3 of your party be HM Slaves as it is to have 6 of them in fighting form.

Less Zubat and Geodude. People sometimes complain that Sentret, Zigzagoon, Bidoof are annoying because they're Rattata substitutes but having Zubats and Geodude in almost every cave is a cliche' I'd love to stop.

Other than that, I'm fine.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I had an idea...wat if battles went 3D like Pokemon Standuim??...im sure DS could handle it

It's got to be very, very different from current games. Perhaps not battles, but if the game world has 8 gyms, a rival, a hometown with a Lab and your mom, numbered routes, HMs including Surf and Strength, an Elite Four, and an evil team... I'm not buying it.

Change the stats system from involving a level multiplier, to something based on the principle of diminishing marginal returns. This way, level becomes less of an issue for multiplayer. Higher level pokemon will still be stronger, but not astronomically so.

This way you can play multiplayer with your friends without having to train your team up to a uniform level (usually 100), good if you're at different stages of the game, or if you're not so interested in training pokemon to level 100.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I have to disagree with this being a general improvement.  I respect your opinion though.

@ SmokedHostage: I did kinda request the elimination of Field Moves; that includes Hidden Machine moves...

@ Xxain: The Dynamic Battle System that I suggested would absolutely DEMAND 3D graphics... I guess I didn't go into enough detail there...

@ Soleron: Were my suggestions too much change for you, or too little?

The next game needs MORE FIRE TYPES...the last gens were terrible about them...not counting evolutions there was very few

@ Xxain: Agreed! Dragon-types are becoming more common than Fire-types... Bad sign, if you ask me...
