Forums - Microsoft - Will the 360 get a slim version once it moves down to 32nm?

Their system is already 200$.
At this point they are really taking advantage of an economy of scale and a reduction would defeat this positive. The only reason Sony was really able to do it was because of a huge demand for it.

I'm not saying it's impossible. In fact it's very probable. These are just the only negatives I can see.

sony will have ps3 slim 2.0 like they did PSP.

360 should be already 45nm, sony managed to pull it off, if they don't well.

microsoft its not mainly a hardware company, sony managed to pull it off because they have done it before, not only that, they are one fo the top companies it doing so along with samsung, panasonic, and lg.

microsoft have the money to do it, but they will want to invest into better build console? story tells me that won't happen.

just like they killed the first xbox.

Ahh, your distaste and bias against MS never ceases to shine through, eh?  First off, you know nothing about Sony and their chip die shrinking.  IBM manufactures their Cell CPUs, not Sony.  MS has their chips manufactured by TSMC.  I highly doubt Sony will do a second slim remodel.  That'd be unnecessary at this point unless they really can't cut costs anymore any other way.

Also, you say MS has the money to redesign the 360, but would rather use it into making it a better built console.  That's kind of treading on your own logic there because a redesign would be for the purpose of reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and improving the reliability of the console.  I'm not sure what story you're listening to, but it's broken.  And the fact they killed the first xbox early has nothing to do with this.  That was because of conflicts with Nvidia (the GPU provider in the original Xbox), which what do you know, is now the GPU provider of the PS3, so if anything watch out for conflicts with the PS3 not being able to drop prices because Nvidia locks the RSX at a high cost.  Also, the original Xbox lasted 5 years.... The 360 is already about to hit 4 years in just 2 more months.

@Prophecy

Sony denied any plans for a PS3 redesign just 3 months before it was revealed... I think it's safe to say if MS was working on a slim or redesign we wouldn't know about it.

you are ignoring all the engineering development. all the you can all the ships you want, actually many companies use the same chips look at arm cortex 8x and powervr graphic ship used in the iphone 3gs, Palm pree and nokia n900.

they all the same ship but only nokia have true multitasking even 4! desktops and its even better at video recording (pre got doesnt even video recording), yet they all use the same ship.

sony have managed to squeeze the console at 45nm making smaller than the 360 and with built in power supply, HDD inside, and a top class 17 fins fan. microsoft will able to pull it off? and on top of that making it reliable?

and sony developed in conjuction with nvidia the RSX actually sony it's not getting it chip from nvidia only but many suppliers.

Please take your off topic ramblings elsewhere.  None of that had anything to do with Microsoft redesigning their console.  Just because you think they can't do it, does not mean it is a valid argument as to why they won't do it.  And who ever said MS had to do it exactly like Sony?  Their redesign could be completely different but still more reliable and cheaper to produce.  Perhaps with Natal built in.

its not offtopic the 360 wasn't design to be able to slim.

if they make slim the HDD wouldn't fit on top, they would have to go to another solution, but breaking compatibility with currect HDD.

engineers should guess this or know this by experience. it's on the 4th year and still no slim,  if they havent yet it's because they didn't plan to do one,

actually there is a possiblity to happen because sony pulled it off with more difficulty. (HDD inside hotter cell and RSX bigger power supply). and with the success microsoft will try to follow them.

but when they are going to have it? 2011?

A slim version offers significant savings on warehousing and shipping (on materials a few cent, die-shrunk components are adopted on "fat" models too, on slim they save only on plastic), compared to the investment necessary to do it, if it's significantly smaller than the previous model. XB360 is already quite slim compared to PS3.

They don't have to make it "slimmer" they can make it shorter though and not hurt the HDD issue at all.  Or they could redesign it so the HDD connects on the side or something.

Also, to all those saying "it's their 4th year and still no slim" well you do realize that the PS1 and PS2 slim models came at like the last year of their generations, don't you?  Only the PS3 Slim has been released semi early due to the massive price trouble Sony has been in.  Now they won't be able to reduce costs much more for the next 2 years while the Wii and 360 continue to get cheaper.

^psp selling quite well and got it slim at it's third year too.
also ps3 slim its not actually a slim but a redesign.

PSP is not a console, sorry.  And no the PSP has never been selling well.  It's always been more expensive and being outsold majorly by the DS.

And the PS3 slim is slimmer and longer.  Just admit that MS can easily redesign or slimify the console to reduce costs some more.

Having slimmed PS3 early, Sony will enjoy warehousing and shipping savings for a longer time. If demand is high this Xmas, making retailers able to put more units on the shelves will help too. So, for the first time this gen, Sony timed its moves quite well, it was about time, heck, the first launch was so clumsy they looked drunk...

It'll probably get a slim/redesign once Natal is released. I dunno what process node they'll be using at the time.

Tease.

oh god you are fanboy i give up, i have better things to discuss with you.

now you are denying PSP sucess? it have outsold 360 even if they were released side by side PSP have doubled 360 sales until last year price cuts it was outselling 360.

not onnly that it managed to break nintendo own handheld market, something sega, and many others failed.

It is a console. It  is a handheld console. PSWii60 are home consoles. When the DS overtakes the PS2 in sales, i guarentee you it will be classed as the highest selling console. And to say the PSP hasn't sold well is an extremely stupid thing to say. What other non-Nintendo handheld gaming platform has done as well as the PSP? Please tell me at least 2.

OT: Maybe, but it will be hard to do. They will likely have hardware problems again, and the HDD likely wont fit on the Slim. Number of other reasons, but they have all been gone over in the thread.
