Forums - Sales - New PlayStation 3 SKUs boost sales 178 per cent

Not only that, it still has all those good games coming out in later in Europe than the rest of the world.

"The PS3 60GB is proving very popular, even with the introduction last week of the 40GB model. 89 percent of purchasers opted for some form of 60GB model,

The 40GB model only accounted for 10% of the sales. It seems people are just grabbing the 60GB-with some form of BC, before the 40GB model becomes the standard.

But of course, consumers don't care about BC anymore - they just want the core Playstation experience.

...allowing SCEE to set their own models and pricing was not a good idea, in retrospect.

it's not a terrible thing as long as they still offer the 60 gig.  It still looks better to the customer that you see a $400 PS3 even if most people buy the $500 one.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Yeah but remember that Sony already announced the 60GB sku as discontinued in Europe. So it's anyone's guess how sales will look like after that sku supply runs out. Mine is a grim guess for Sony.

I hate sony. Everyone hates sony. Let's all have a happy "hate sony party". I'll bring the Wiiata to smash! Oh, did I say Sony... I meant something else entirely.

Give the new SKU some time. it's a 'cheaper' level of console, meant to appeal to not-so-hardcore crowd. The 40gb, is Sony's platform, that will grow in sales over time, becuase the hardcore guys dont want it, and the every day gamers, dont know about it.

Yeah, i suppose Nintendo still has the highest chances of being King this holiday season.

I actually think sales for all 3 consoles are going to be close to even. Why? The Nintendo Wii is going to sell out and make people who originally wasn't thinking of the other consoles to look at them.

Number 3 getting a new SKU and outselling number 2 for a week is hardly suprising. I'm very interested in seeing how well it'll do in a few weeks after things stabilise, though.

You know, it's not that the idea of Nintendo selling out this season is bad or anything, but i question your scenario due to Nintendo having made announcements already that they are dishing out thrice the number of Wii's this winter as compared to the last. I just can't believe that Nintendo would have supply issues when demand is seemingly low in Japan and....let's say moderate(for the Wii average) in Europe and the US. IMO they MUST have a good deal of Wii's hidden somewhere (other side of the moon for instance? ).

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Sony has bet the bank on this holiday season. If this doesn't propel them past the 360 in holiday sales, I think they need to consider it a failure because come spring 2008, MS will probably be pushing another price cut, driving up sales again. They should definitely have wiggle room for another price cut and if they don't, they need to really evaluate their manufacturing process because one $50 price cut in 30 months just ain't gonna cut it in this market.

At this point, I have to believe that MS is making a tidy profit on 360 hardware.

Now that is a backhanded marketing strategy. Introduce a cheap model and threaten to discontinue the expensive one with more features, and people respond by buying the more expensive model.

I can't decide whether those 60GB buyers are clever for knowing what they want and grabbing it while they can, of foolish for being manipulated into purchasing a 60GB like that.

Hey, if they want it, they better buy it. Otherwise, no features for them.
