Forums - Sony - ShopTo: PSPgo "ALMOST DEAD" on arrival !!

I'm all for DD and basically cutting out the middle man. I one day will like to be a game developer, and retailers like gamestop cutting into the money that the devs make by advertising their used games and making tons of money off of it disgusts me. I mean, how many times does gamestop have a "trade-in" deal where if you trade in 3 specific games, you can buy a new one for 20 dollars. Those 3 specific games are either recent, or big sellers so they will be able to sell that used copy for like 50 dollars or so, ridiculous.

I know its just business, and they are doing what they can do to be more profitable, but they can't forget who it is that is keeping them profitable. Don't bite the hand that feeds you, in this case, its the devs.

I"M interesting in the PSPGo, but the price is wrong for me. So I'm actually enjoying the retailers over reacting. It might put pressure to put the price to the percieved value level. Closer $150-200. Seriously they got rid of the UMD and increased the internal memory? should be cheaper.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

If retail is cut from the picture, and cost-of-goods is also cut, the publishers will see revenue at nearly 2x the rate per unit sold.

Publishers will push HARD for digital distribution to work, trust me. And retail, likewise, will push hard back. This pushing war really has nothing to do with Sony directly. Already they've likely forced Sony to bump the price on the Go and DD software (so the retailers can make a decent profit) with threats of not carrying it, otherwise. That hurts the 3rd party publishers far more than it will ever hurt Sony, who will probably be selling the device for a small profit throughout its lifetime (the retail cut will be more though, for certain).

Politically, if you disagree with the actions of the middleman, and want to see the games industry thrive, great new games be made, and game prices eventually drop, you should buy a PSP Go out of principle (or an iPhone or Zune HD or DSi or somesuch).

If you adore the middleman (who can blame them for wanting in on some of your wallet action, really?), you should definately buy new UMDs/DS games/CDs from retailers, and then trade them in at retailers for some paltry credit on the next item you buy from them. Be sure to pay like 90% of the new price for used games though -- if you pay less, you might be endangering the profiteering of the store, and retailers might be forced to sell games at what digitally distributed games would probably cost without retail intervention and threats.

If only the retailers had chosen to share the obscene profits from used games... maybe they'd be much happier, the games industry would be healthy and vibrant, and DD wouldn't be looming so threateningly on the horizon.

The fault is not with used games or retailers, the fault is with the games industry and not realizing what customers want, its why so many companies are having so much trouble

Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I don't see what Potential PSP GO! has... I mean it's expensive and retailers are hatin on it. Well I never really liked what they did with PSP GO!. I felt it was unnecessary.

Well I still have my PSP-2000 so it'll be fun to see how the market receives this.

Heres a question. How are you meant to sell a product when the stores that sell your product dont want to stock it because your admitting once it sells you will take away all there business?

Sony- HAHA! TAKE THAT GAME SELLERS....wait...can you please stock the system so I can eventually take all business away from you? Hello game sellers? *knock knock* anyone there?

Pachter is so dumb it makes my blood hurt. If all retailers sell the PSPgo at the price suggested by Sony, then they all lose money due to decreased game sales. If they (as retailers do with fridges) sell them at good profit margins, then they will have to sell above the suggested price, which would anger consumers a lot more than not selling it at all.

How can he be so dumb?

Why do you think the thing costs as much as it does? Do you think Sony just decided to charge more for the hell of it?  Do you think it actually costs that much to make?  It requires less parts than the PSP-3000 (no UMD drive), and thus probably costs less to make.

The reason it costs so much is to give retailers a decent margin on the item.  However, retailers are scared of DD, and thus still refuse to carry it.  I wouldn't be surprised if retailers make as much as $50 USD per Go sold in the States.  The only problem with that is that they can't hope for 4-5 games sold per system anymore (and that's just *new* games), and thus they still lose out in the end.  Plus, if the PSP Go becomes a successs, this leads to more DD-only consoles in the future, and that leads to less and less retailer control over the market.

Retailers are scared.

You have to look at it from the retailer's perspective. You have limited funds to purchase new product.

You can sell the PSP Go and make say a 15% margin and no accessories or games. That means you've tied up $220 to make $30.

Or you can try to sell something else, say a PS3 that makes the same 15% margin. That means you pay $255 to make $45. However you will be able to sell more games and accessories for a 30% margin. It only costs $25 more investment to buy another PS3 rather than a PSP Go and you can sell more profitable product in the future.

Which do you think is the better investment?

Retailers have literally no margin on ps3s.  Nor 360s, and very little on the Wii.

Retailers, much like the manufacturers themselves, generally sell consoles at ethe break even point,a nd soemtiems even at a little loss, because they expect to make that back and then some via games and (most importantly) accessories.  Controllers and cables have probably the highest margin of anything a retailer might sell to accompany said console.

Won't widespread DD eventually push up the price of consoles? With no software retailers will have to get a cut. I think it's a bad thing, really. No cheap used game deals, no nice physical backup. I suppose for a portable system it makes some sense, but definately not on home consoles. I hope it doesn't take off.

I blame Wii Fit...+!!!

In any case Media Markt is already promoting the PSPGo launch for the 1st of October. So no worries there.

Also nice to see the local Media Markt store is currently completely sold out of PS3 slim stock. They had tons of them a few a days ago, in the meantime the 360 stock seemed to have remained as good as identical.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."
