Forums - Nintendo - 67% of Japanese Wii owners haven't used their system "of late"?

According to the President of Enterbrain (Famitsu publisher) Hirokazu Hamamura:

It's not all good news for Nintendo, though. Hamamura noted that the Wii hasn't seen a second big hit at the level of Wii Sports, and cited figures that suggest 67% of Wii owners haven't used the system of late. However, he admitted that Wii Fit is drawing attention, and added that it's possible that more games make the platform switch akin to Monster Hunter 3.

-What kind of time period is "of late"?

-How can such a statistic even be accurately gathered? (I'm a bit skeptical)

-Could this lack of games be the reason for declining Wii sales in Japan?

-How does this compare to Wii usage in regions other than Japan? (related vgchartz thread)

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

95% of all statistics are made on the spot, including this one.

I would like to know the meaning of 'of late' the size of the sample and everything else before I give this any credence.

Very interesting statistic if true.

It's also not very useful without comparisons to other systems. Not just current gen systems but for example what was the PS2 usage rate in 2001? Also what are the rates for systems based on sales. By which I mean is it higher for systems that sell quicker and less for systems that sell less quickly, the same, or perhaps reversed. The Wii is the fastest selling system in Japan which means it's grabbing a larger share of less dedicated gamers quicker. Whatever the reality may be there's no denying that that figure doesn't sound good for the Wii.

meh, that will all change in a few weeks

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Hrmm, times are tough, Nintendo must move it up to the next level

Super Mario Galaxy -- I choose you!

Those guys at Famitsu have been pro Sony from the past, just in case no one hasn't noticed before, so no wonder why they feel like to bash at the WII.

And perhaps Famitsu should look at the release list of the PS3 in Japan, which is less half the size comparing to the list of the WII. With perhaps only 1 or 2 games which might boost hardware sales. If WII is bad news, then how bad news is the PS3?

I heard the stat comes from the Everybody Votes Channel.

I don't see how you guys think that the number is made up, Japan has seen almost no great games for the system in so long, plus the Japanese go to school and work they don't sit around and play games all day like people in NA.

There isnt any proof it isnt. The number itself is so statistically useless, how long is 'Of late'? A day? A week? A month?

How large was the sample? What was the 'margin of error'?
