Nier Replicant Features Hot Hermaphrodite Action
And, all right, maybe some action RPG gameplay, too. Sheesh.

Square Enix has released some new details on Nier Replicant, the PS3 action RPG they first teased in Japan last week. Like Nier Gestalt (the Xbox 360 title that was first shown at E3 this year), the Cavia-developed game is due out next year in Japan.
It's not completely clear still how the 360-only Nier Gestalt and the PS3-only Nier Replicant are connected to each other. Both are set in the same world, and both have the same basic plot of Nier (a rough-and-tough white-haired swordsman) traveling the world to save a girl named Yonah from the Black Scrawl virus. The Niers of both games are different, though; the one you control in Replicant looks a great deal younger and more slender than the muscular, rugged hero of Gestalt. What's more, Yonah is Nier's daughter in Gestalt but his younger sister in Replicant. Two different takes on the same story, perhaps, or a way for Square Enix to differentiate the two ports?
Either way, a bit more has been revealed about the supporting characters. Grimoire Weiss is a magical talking book that accompanies Nier on his quest, and Kaine (pictured above) is a "lady" whose left half has been taken over by a monster. We say "lady" because Square Enix says she's actually a hermaphrodite (oo-er) and that the bullying she's received due to this has led her to dress as a lady, even though she's violent, vulgar and man-like in personality.
It's not known yet whether the US will get the PS3 Replicant in addition to the 360 Gestalt which has already been announced for an American release. Stay tuned.
