Forums - General - The fight over Darwin - Teaching evolution in schools

In Ontario at least it's part of the curriculum. Though I really can't quite fathom an education that broaches the subject of science but somehow avoids the theory of evolution.

Dozens of religious figures lived to be hundreds of years old (Noah, Seth, Enos, etc.), but modern science would prove that impossible. Should teachings of life expectancy be removed from textbooks as well?

I only read one case in this entire story of intelligent design being taught over evolution, and even then, Dover's not exactly the most important city in America. Many schools teach evolution now, so the problem is being overblown. Hell, I was taught evolution in my school, and this was in Montana back in the 90s/early 00s. Besides, there's no conclusive proof that evolution is true, just lots of evidence. That's why it's a theory. Not believing in it is perfectly fine. Now, if you deny something like the existence of gravity, that's a whole other level.

Personally, I believe in evolution, but I'm not going to fret about those who don't.

Actually Montana. Scientifically speaking, Gravity is just a theory too.

I hope this number goes up within a few years, for the United States' sake! It's rediculous that evolution isn't taught there when it's been taught for MANY years in other countries, like Canada.

Evolution has been taught for many years as well in America.

@Montana & Stof. Actually scientifically speaking, both gravity and evolution are facts.

The fact of gravity is that masses attract each other, the fact of evolution is that species change over time. The theories of evolution and gravity are the explanations of these observations.

Well then I don't understand why there isn't a higher % that believes in it. I find it weird that people believe in something that has no evidence (w/e religion they're in) and not something that has tons of evidence. O_o It's scary!

I'm from Canada too, but evolution or anything relating to it was never taught in any class i ever had.  The subject was never even been brought up in any class or grade.

WTF ? Are you guys serious ?

I had it tough to me in school despite living in catholic dominant Poland , even our priest on religion lessons have been talking that evolution doesn't deny creation theory as the 7 day of world creation is just a allegory.

Actually it's not an allegory. The creation story is about how the elohim(spirits/Gods) repaired the earth and cleared the atmosphere after all plant and animal life had been destroyed in the fall of Lucifer.
