I'm thinking its a short term cut to clear out stocks of the Wii SPorts Bundle, get rid of them in time for the NSMB Wii bundle

But NSMB Wii comes out a month and a half after this promotion. Would they have so much stock they need that much time to clear it?

If they've been manufacturing around 2-2.5 million Wii's a month, they might have millions, of course, even then, it would probably sell out like gangbusters anyways, so we'd have a couple of weeks with bare shelves, and long lines again

they're so not manufacturing 2 - 2.5 million a month anymore ...

In order to hit their projection of 26 million, they'd have to be doing around 2.1-2.3 million a month

Is that 26 million for this fiscal year start April?

April 1st 2009-March 31st 2010 I believe

Right ...

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 05th Apr 2009 to 05th Sep 2009:

Console Wii
Total
4,695,832

So yeah they still have a bunch to sell, and they probably have millions ready to be sold

Surely they have abandoned the idea of selling 26 million this fiscal year, unless they do have a price cut planned. Even then ..

Its still their projection, they haven't changed it

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

It's a shame Wii is not getting a price cut as it's way over priced for it's badly outdated hardware. Nintendo can afford knocking off easily $50.

Haven't we heard this before? Sony and MS also denied imminent price cuts earlier this year, doesn't mean one's not coming, only they don't want to announce it yet.

True, but hearing Nintendo say its retailer led is interesting, makes me think its a short term promotion

That's not how pricing works

And what exactly would be the benefit for WallMart to decide to sell Wii at a loss for a short period ?

Not sure I get the reasoning here...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Get more people through the door, sell software ect. It does happen, Sainsburys sold the 360 for £99 last year.

Oh , I know how it works, Big N won't stop overcharging for their outdated hardware until they are forced to. Like i said they could easily drop the price some and still make a profit on their hardware.

They think it's good for the consumer.

We don't know if they will be taking a loss on it or not, Nintendo could be sending them the bundles at a reduced price, and even if they are, tey may feel that its better to take the loss on the bundles due to increased foot traffic to their stores and higher software sales, and to make room on shelves for new bundles in the future

Why should Wii waste a price cut to fight PS3 when it's still 3rd? The gap with the 2nd increased, although by a small amount, even in the week of XB360 price cut and the 3rd worst ever Wii's week, so no need to worry, yet.
