When did the Japanese really start moving away from home consoles?

By now, every vgchartz poster knows Japan is more and more all about handhelds, they´ve been moving away from consoles for quite some time now.

But as far as I know, it wasn´t always like this....both PS1 and PS2 did extremely good in the territory..so did the SNES, the NES....but in this 7th generation, consoles are so pathetic, sales wise, compared to handhelds.

Anyway, did this start happening by the end of the last generation?

I think Japan is too much of a fast pacing country and people are always on the go or just out of home more so handhelds are more convenient for them.

Yeah, but wasn´t Japan 'fast' during the 16 bit/32 bit generation too?...I mean, I´m more curious as to why the move away from consoles has really accelerated in the past few years, and not before.

@ JGarret , Honestly who knows, itll be just as puzzling as to why NA are now really big on hatchback cars all of a sudden (or at least in my city lol). ..or maybe now Japan really sees this gen's handheld as something more then just a 'kid's toy' and more acceptable to people of all ages and is now the new trend?
