I'm doing a research thesis in college about evolving character roles throughout video game history. Does anyone know where to I can find information about the best selling video games by year starting as far back as possible. I know on this website they have a weekly function for top selling games- is there a way to search yearly? If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it!

Yes, you can search yearly, but sadly it doesn't go too far back for American sales.

Just go to Charts. And on the right side you'll see each region and an option for weekly, monthly, and yearly.

You could always do best selling game by release year, if that could fit into your report. As Auron mentioned, best selling by year will only go back to around 2000 out of Japan, almost no matter where you check (unless somebody has managed to compile it from shipment data, but I doubt that).

Edit: If that would work, you can just ask and I'm sure we can help you get the list precise.
